I,m thinking of giving my Syrian hamster some porridge this evening for the first time,I was wondering how many hours it would be safe to leave it in the cage before if went off,as sometimes he gets up after I,ve gone to bed, thanks.

Re: Porridge
6 hoursish? For mine it's an over night thing. Or when my hammie came out at the smell of my breaky i gave him some when he came out of his bed. I didnt need to worry about leaving it in because the half teaspoon- 1 full teaspoon was devoured in no time!

Re: Porridge
How do you guys make porridge up for your hamsters? Do you just add water to the oats and bring to the boil in a small pot and cook as normal? No salt added obviously!

Re: Porridge
I mix 1/4 teaspoon on lactol (lactose free puppy/kitten powder milk) with 1 teaspoon each of hot water and porridge oats. Then mix in a teeny glass tealight holder. Sometimes I add in a bit of liseed or wheatgerm. I don't bother to cook it. Lizzy gets it once or twice a week. I put it in in the evening and take the empty bowl out in the morning. It's one of the few foods she'll get out of bed early to eat!

Re: Porridge
Thanks guys. I have skimmed milk and semi-skimmed milk in the house but I know not to actually use milk too much as hamsters can`t digest it, so I will probably use water or soak the oats in milk only just to soften them.
