Default Food for Roborovski

I recently got a robo hammy, and they sold me pah hamster mix when I got her. I really don't think she likes it though, as when I gave her a bit of bird seed, some kale and a cricket that went and the food stayed. My pet food supplier can get me Burgess dwarf hamster food and harry hamster. I'm also looking at the silvers mix but would prefer to buy from my friend. Out of interest though how long would the silvers mix last for a robo? I would also be interested in making my own mix if anyone else does that? I have bird seed, maize, pumpkinseed, hempseed, linseed and low sugar cereal and pellet free rabbit food as I make my own rat mix using the shunamite principles.

Hello Ami_j

Robo's are not diabetes prone so they can eat all of the Harry Hamster & both types of Burgess food the dwarf mix & the Syrian mix.

The only thing with those is they have the grass pellets in them. Ham's don't eat them so don't get enough fibre in there diet.

My mix's have a one year use by date from when you buy them, as long as they are kept in a air tight container. One dwarf will eat "roughly" 1kg of my mix's a year. If you buy the HH or Burgess mix's they leave the grass pellets so you end up needing more of those for a year.

I would advise against mixing your own hamster food because although the Shunamite diet is better than commercial food like HH & Burgess it's not precise enough. When I mixed the recommended % & had the mix's analysed they were way to low on Protein & way too high on Fat. So unless you can have your mix analysed I would say don't

Hope that helps a little

I feed my roborovski on Burgess Supahamster Harvest mix (not the dwarf version though as it`s bland) I use the normal one with the syrian pictured on the bag. It has all the flaked grains that the dwarf vesrion lacks, but I remove the extruded biscuits (brown & green) as I don`t like the raising agents and colourants within those).

I add to this:

hemp seed
buckwheat
jumbo organic porridge oats (Tesco`s own brand)
Budgie tonic mix/canary mix (pet shops)
Dry mealworms

I also feed fresh food daily in very small amounts in the form of fresh corn on the cob (one nibblet a day from the cob), two fresh sprouted mung beans (sprouted at home in a jar) and a small piece of apple.

The seperate ingredients can be found in supermarkets, healthfood shops or pet shops. There are other seeds and wholegrains that can be added but it depends on what you can source and if you feel more variety is required. Robos love small seeds and grains. I wouldn`t touch Harry Hamster for a robo as it`s all large extruded biscuits, corn and alfalfa. Nothing like what a roborovski loves. Which is why I recommend the Burgess Supahamster. Silver`s mixes are obviously the better choice though.

No problem I will do.

When I thought about it your mix works out better if it is going to last her 6 months. 500grams doesn't sound a lot but I bet as its small light bits there will be a big volume.

Yes that is true. Plus there is no wastage as all the mix gets eaten, where in the mix's brought in shops the hams leave the grass pellets so you need more of that food to make up for the bit's they leave.

Good choice. That`s the mix I like the look of aswell as it has the most seeds and grains in it. 21 I think? Great variety. I`m looking at some of the Rat Rations puffed grains and other seperates at the moment but havn`t decided yet on what to go for. I like the puffed varieties and the egg biscuit. Something I don`t have at the moment but know these would go down well with my two!

Well it showed up today, and she has eaten some, certainly seemed to enjoy the bit she had! Will it really last her 6months?
