Default Re: can hamsters, gerbils and mice eat a guinea pig mix?

I perhaps will explain how I came to my %.

I was not happy with the commercial hamster/gerbil food. Because it has the grass pellets in which very few hamsters & gerbils eat. This means that the hams & gerbils do not get a balanced diet. The grass pellets are put in for fibre. In my mix's they have the fibre from different seeds/grains & pulses which get eaten totally this means there is nothing to be thrown away saving you money plus a complete balanced food

Also all the commercial mix's have corn/maize & or flaked peas in them. These are high in sugar once digested. So I wanted to make a complete food for diabetes prone hamsters.

My hamsters were every now & then getting thin. It was the food the Protein was too low until I fed the 19% Protein

I spent 12 months in total researching both in the U.K & Germany websites, information from both country's to find out the best % for them. Many. many hours

I then started to make the mix's which have now been on sale for some time. If you look in the nutrition section of this forum you will find my threads about making the mix's. Plus the threads on how people feel about my mix's & there hams.

In making & researching all the seeds/grains/nuts/mealworms/fish that hams & Gerbils can eat I have included many of the above that are just not in commercial mix's.

I am not telling you about my food because I get money from the sale of the mix's. I do not get anything. I only get the satisfaction that hamsters are eating a better food.

@Silver....Do you think you will ever make a gerbil mix (or a few) like the hamster ones?
I have gerbils and they leave the majority of the shop brought mixes, I've started mixing 2different ones together so I doubt they are getting all their nutrients....just eating all the yummy bits.

Yes Purple_x

I have made three mix's. One has been tested with great results. Waiting on the other two to begin testing.

I will P.M you the link to the Gerbil forum where the person & her rescue Gerbils are testing the mix's.

I actually think Science Selective is the best commercial mix out there for diabetes prone hams. As it's nuggets and doesn't have any added sugar/sugary ingredients, it's good in that respect. It also has the correct protein and slightly lower than needed fat (19%, 5%), and I'm pretty sure fat isn't great for diabetes prone hams either. The only real issue with it is the fibre content (5%)

I would just like to add that I have used all hammy food in the past and they always without fail left the grassy green pellet.. In fact I don't think I've ever known a hammy that likes them..
Silvers mix is amazing as my hammies eat everything.. In fact sometimes they are too busy eating to pouch any.. I waste a lot less food :0)
good luck food hunting

I must have been lucky with Treacle, she would eat everything including the green pellets in the Harry Hamster

This has been a h-u-g-e concern of mine. The only way to guarantee a proper diet is to feed all one kind of pellet, where every individual pellet has the same % of every nutrient. To say nothing of how excruciatingly boring this would be for your poor little hammie, it's not something I've ever seen.

All the hamster food I've seen is a mix of many different things. Most of the hamster food mixes I've seen seem to be made primarily of millet. Thor doesn't care for millet. Every night when I refill his bowl, he digs directly through the millet for the big seeds and stuff. He would need to eat every kind of all the individual different foods, and in just the right proportions, to consume a proper diet.

I have thrown away unbelievable amounts of millet. This is more than just a waste. It also means that Thor's diet is not balanced. And that means he may be at risk of a nutritional deficiency.

I have zealously investigated new and diverse human foods that Thor might like. Should he actually develop a nutritional deficiency, varying his diet would have a good chance of "patching the hole" in his nutritional profile.

It's good to try feeding your pet different kinds of foods. Just make sure to be careful with food safety. It would be a shame indeed if you killed your hamster with something you fed him.
