Cool advice on a balanced diet for new hamster

i read that the two main causes of wet tail in Syrian hamsters is stress and improper balanced diet. i want to do everything i can to ovoid him getting wet tail.

he has hamster muesli that i buy from pets at home and i give him apple (iv only had him 7 days) he is 9-10 weeks old

what exactly should he be eating everyday/week for a balanced diet that will give him all the vitamins and nutrients he needs

maybe you could tell me your feeding routine everyday with your hammy?

thank you

We feed the syrians harry hamster (currently mixed with tesco peanut and sunflower mix). Same goes for two hybrids. The other hybrids are on Silvers basic dwarf mix, while the robos are on the basic mix with flaked pea.

Then we feed every day or two. When depends on how much is in the food bowl and the store. If the food bowl is fairly full we leave that ham unfed for the day. If the store is exceptionally full we'll leave the ham for the day. If the store isn't too huge and the food bowl is relatively empty then we feed them - 1 teaspoon for dwarf hamsters, 1 tablespoon for syrians.

Then we give carrot, broccoli, apple and cucumber as occasional treats.

My previous two hamsters were fed Harry Hamster and like kyrilliondaemon, food only ever got topped up if most of the other stuff was gone.

Harvey, my current hamster, who I've only had for a week, is on Science Supreme Selective Hamster food. I've still got some Harry Hamster left over from my previous hamster and was going to change Harvey over to this. I had started changing him on to HH but he enjoys the Science Supreme, so at the moment he's getting both (at the same time). I've not got a feeding regime sorted out for Harvey yet but he will go on to the same regime as my previous hamsters. Not sure yet whether he'll stay on SS Selective (it stinks!!) or if I'll change him over to Harry Hamster.

Just so you know Science Supreme make both the Selective Hamster and Harry Hamster

my Syrians are on Silver's mix with banana, which I love because they eat up every little bit, which means they must love it as well. when I had my first Syrian on the Burgess, he just left so many bits that it was clear he wasn't getting a balanced diet (since you have to eat ALL of it to get the proper nutrition as written on the bag). so after hearing all this good stuff about Silver's mixes, I decided to switch over. best thing I ever did for their diet haha.

I fill their bowls about 2 handfuls each, though my hands are quite small. I would say maybe 1-2 tablespoons? then I top up as required. sometimes that's every other day, sometimes a little longer.

I have noticed that, since switching to Silver's mixes, they don't really hoard as much...? they eat most of it straight away from the bowl lol, taking a bit back to bed to munch on in their sleep!

fruit & veg is given at least 3 times a week, but never every day, so they won't get diarrhoea from too much. it's mainly cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, cherries, grapes and bananas they get, because that's what I buy most haha.

other stuff all counts as treats, whether that be a nut treatstick left in the cage to nibble on, or dog/cat biscuits, or yoghurt drops. this stuff is only given on occasion, but I might have to limit Hamburglar a bit now since the vet said he was a little bit fat. :C

I also offer them baby food, which they love! anything without onion, garlic or citrus in should be okay. they love the sweet squash and chicken one, and creamed porridge. I thought I'd feel silly buying baby food but I always use self-checkout anyway so it's fine hahah.

i feed a tablespoon of either silvers banana or apple mix to the syrians

the dwarfs a teaspoon of silvers basic dwarf mix

silvers hamsters mixes are brilliant, the postage is a little steep but they are so worth it and even better value i you can get them in bulk xxxx

I feed all of mine on Silver's mixes. Topping up as necessary. They also have a bowl of dried grasses and flowers that they love. They have a seed stick but not a very sweet one. They have a rice and vegetable one at the moment. They will eat most fruits (not citrus) and will sing and dance for a cooked green bean. They only have veg or fruit every other day. In between a sultana or half a small date. If the weather's hot they love a piece of cold cucumber. I'm going to try a piece of melon this week.

I also feed Silver's mix It's really popular because it is awesome, hams eat 99% of it and it's perfectly nutritionally balanced. I give Darla my Robo (dwarf) a teaspoon each day, he pouches it all and stores it, and noms on it throughout the day. I found it pointless to give him a food bowl as it spends most of the time empty so I give him the food on my hand every morning.

Sometimes he gets a bit of veg/pasta/noodle/fruit, but not very often, mainly because he seems to like his mix more than he does any of these "treats"
