Default Walnuts

I read in one of the threads about putting a walnut in its shell in to the cage to help keep nails trim.

Is this okay? I have looked every where for walnuts in their shells but no one has them, however my german friend brought some back from there for me

I give mine brazilnuts and hazelnuts in their shells - for teeth and nails - like you I don't often see walnuts in shells but I wouldn't have thought they'd be harmful. The only nuts I know they shouldn't have (and even then they'd need to eat them in large quantities to cause any harm ) are almonds (they contain traces of cyanic acid - cyanide - but I'm a bit dubious about how harmful the odd one would be to a hamsters).

Still best be safe!

Most of mine currently have a walnut in their cage! I got some mixed nuts cheap from Lidl (think they were selling off their Xmas stock). I used nut crackers to part crack them, as when they are whole the hams seem to lose interest in them pretty quickly. Its great to see them work out how to get into them, though it does seem to take some of mine a few days.
And they really enjoy the treat inside when they do manage it!!

(Me I prefer my walnuts on top of a walnut whip )
