I always have used millet in the past and my syrians always loved it, this time Pearl my syrian and Binks my chinese have only nibbled a bit at it........... Also when i had birds i used to buy the millet loose, i used to get an empty egg shell and put a bit of sand in it and sprinkle the millet in it and water it ina bit, it would grow as millet grass, the birds love it and im pretty sure i did it once or twice for my hamsters over the years but was at least 30 years ago so memory goes a bit when you get older, lol.

Actually i used to draw a face on the empty egg shell so that when the grass grew it came up like a funny haircut.

My dwarves lose their furry little minds for millet seed. It grows on a stalk, and kindof in bunches along the stalk. So I give each of them a little bundle every day. It's the only time Chaos ever sits still...

Whenever I look at the store, the milley spray on the bird aisle will be different colors. I don't know what kind to get. It will have the same packaging but the millet thing itself is light/dark. If that makes sense.

Where would I buy loose millet spray at? I just barely found the packaged kind in the pet store.

Some pet shops (the ones that don't want to rip you off completely), and some market stalls that sell pet things.
Basically everywhere other than the bigger pet shops.

We got lucky and found that its sold in our smaller pet shop here, which is handy given that most of ours adore it and the pets at home stuff is packaged and costs about three times what its actually worth.
We got the first lot at a market stall when out for the day about an hours drive away and I was a bit worried we'd have to either go that far or get the overpriced stuff in future, so am glad we found the smaller pet shop selling it (the shop has odd opening hours so we rarely visit it).
We'll be buying it at 10p for a resonably long stalk of it now, whereas pets at home was £3-4 for about 12 sticks of half the length.

Edit - And to answer the original question we go for the lighter stuff (like in the pic in this thread), its what we can buy loose so is what ours have had before. Didn't get them the darker stuff incase they weren't so fussed on it. It may well be that hamsters are happy with both though.

I'll try to look in our pet stores. I haven't found many smaller pet shops where I currently live and the ones I did go into were really small and sold mostly older outdated products. I didn't look for millet so I'll have to ask. Is this something maybe a feed store would carry? I know I have one of those in the area.
