Default Timothy hay?

I was reading on the Internet and read that hamsters can eat Timothy hay but I wasn't sure if it was true or not. If they can do you free feed it? I have alot of hay for my chinchillas, so providing it for Whisper would not be a problem. I also have pretreated wooden sticks for my chins but I'm not sure what type of wood they are. Are any woods toxic to hamsters? I know the wood is chin safe though, but forget what kind I ordered. Thanks so much!

I mix timothy hay with woodshavings for Dinah's substrate. I also put some in a wire cube for her to eat but she really doesn't bother.
