Default "Fab Dwarf Hamster Food" Opinions?

My local pet shop (Just For Pets) sells a Dwarf Hamster mix which isn't available on their website (otherwise I would just link you all to it!) so I wanted to find out what everybody thought of it. It's about £3 for 900g.

On the bag it lists these ingredients:
Hamster pellets, kibbled peas, flaked wheat, alfalfa pellets, kibbled maize, red millet, meat derived extrusions, canary seed, small striped sunflower, coloured mini cereal extrusions, carrot flakes, whole barley, mealworms, peanuts.

It also says: Typical Analysis - Crude Protein 16%, Oil Content 5%, Crude Ash 4.8%, Crude Fibre 4.5%.

I don't know how to interpret that last bit... But everything else looks fine, doesn't it? I've taken out the pea/carrot bits for my new Chinese.

What breed of Dwarf hamster is it?. And did you buy it from a pet shop?.

If you have a "Winter White" or "Campbells hamster" from a pet shop then the hamster will be a hybrid which is part WW & Part Campbells.

If this is the case then you need to take out anything that has sugar in it because they have a high risk of Diabetes, which is the peas, maize & the carrot.

If you have a Chinese hamster weather pet shop brought or breeder then take the same out of the mix as they are also prone to diabetes.

The mix it's self is a little low in Fibre it really needs to be 9% so you could add fennel seeds or Bulghur wheat but this will be a guessing game as you will have no way of telling if it's within the normal fibre amounts.

I would also like the protein level to be about 18% so you could add some more protein in mealworms or krill. But it will be a guessing game as to wether you get the right levels.

I have a mix coming out soon. It will be sold on a pet food website. It's 100% natural & you will not have to take anything out or add to it as the levels will be right.

I am not going to recieve any money from the sale of the mix's even though I have made the mix's so im not telling you about this because I will proffit from them.

I hope that was of some help xxx

You should be able to get Harry Hamster either locally or online. It's a much better mix, all you need to remove is the corn.

Harry Hamster has;
19% - Protein
8% - Fibre
6% - Fat
5% - Ash

I add millet, kitten biscuits, porridge oats and dried mealworms to this for variety.
