Fruit and vegetables for hamsters.
Hey,
A few questions:
1) Are fruit and veg good for hamsters?
2) If so, how often should you feed your hamster a piece of fruit or vegetable?
3) How big should you pieace be?
4) What fruit and veg are safe for hamsters? A big list would be great!
5) Are there any other 'healthy' treats for hamsters that don't involve fruit and vegetables?
Thanks, Samo.

Re: Fruit and vegetables for hamsters.
Yes they are good for them but in moderation, to much can cause tummy trouble as can introducing to much to soon.
The size depends very much on the type of hamster your feeding. My baby syrian gets about a cm cube of veg everyday just to try him on some different things but I have had him less than a week. My last syrian Cat would get a little larger pieces but every other day.
There are pretty huge lists out there of what they can eat. Mine have tried cheese (not much as they get fat!) couscous, pasta, rice, boiled egg, chicken, cooked veggies, baby food, porridge and Cat used to love a drop of natural yogurt which he would lick off a spoon.

Re: Fruit and vegetables for hamsters.
1.) Fruit is not 'good' as such, it should only be fed occasionally as a treat. Veg has no nutritional benefits, however hamsters do appreciate the variation in their diet. It also acts as a healthy treat.
2.) Theres no set amount you should feed it, its up to your own personal choice. I choose to feed it about once a week, I wouldn't reccommend you feed it more than 3 times a week to avoid upset stomachs.
3.) Thumb nail size for a syrian, finger nail size for a dwarf
4.) Theres a list on the wiki section of the forum
5.) Seeds like millet or hemp and porridge oats are other healthy treats x

On the wiki there is a list of the good and bad foods for hamsters. It will tell you all bout the fruits and veggies they like.

Re: Fruit and vegetables for hamsters.
Does anyone have a link for this wiki article? I've tried looking but cant find anything. I'm wondering whether hamsters can have a little bit of parsley, Basil and Thyme herb plants (or what types (if any) they can have)
