Default Sweet tooth?

My friend and I have a bit of a problem. Is it possible for a hamster to despise all fruits and vegetables, but absolutley love treats, and treats only? We've tried giving Tootsie apples, bananas, grapes, raisins, strawberries, pears, carrots, celery, you name it! But she turns up her nose to all. At first we thought she was sick, so we gave her a treat. She gobbled it down. What happened? She's eaten healthy before! Should my friend take her to the vet? What's going on?

What type of hamster is Tootsie? Dwarf hamsters should not have a lot of sweet fruit as they are prone to diabetes. It may just not be to her liking and when you do feed fruit/veg it should just be a tiny bit the size of a fingernail. Many hamsters do not take things from the hand but if you leave them in the cage they are soon gone. Only give one of the yogurt treats every few days are they do contain a lot of sugar.

My guess is that Tootsie has developed a craving for the too sweet yoghurt drops. Like us, if we only eat junk food like hamburgers and french fries and potato chips, good fresh fruits and vegetables taste pretty bad to us. The problem is not with the fruit and vegetables BUT with our diet!

I don't give any of my hamsters sweets, like yogurt drops. I find that all species naturally prefer bitter tasting greens, like dandelion greens, zuchini (courgettes) and romaine lettuce. But I also give them cucumber and asparagus. I only give Syrians the occasional piece of apple or banana.

I bet if you stopped giving your hammie the yoghurt drops, she would soon start to appreciate the healthy veggies and snacks!

She will be healthier and maybe even live a longer life too.

Tootsie is my friends hamster, and a Syrian. ("Teddy Bear" hamster, she calls her.) I have to say, the owner of Tootsie (we'll call her Elly,) does give her ham a lot of those Yougurt Drops! I've showed Elly your posts, and she has agreed to have Tootsie go on a little Yougurt Drop diet! Hopefully, soon Tootsie will be eating more healty.

But for the time bieng, are there any other suggestions to why all this is going on?
