Sunflower Seed Problem?
Okay, so I usually get my hamster this Fortidiet mix. But recently I saw that he's been taking all the sunflower seeds and scattering the rest around the bowl. I took most of the sunflower seeds out and gave him just the rest of the food. Is this okay for him?
I just know that I heard that sunflower seeds are fattening. But is it okay if I just give them to him as treats or such? Just asking. Thanks for any help.

Re: Sunflower Seed Problem?
I reckon thats quite a good idea, especially if he is picking them out and not eating the rest. You could always try giving him them once he has eaten the rest as a reward? But other wise they are fine as an occasional treat.

Kaytee's forti-diet mix? This one?: Kaytee Forti-Diet Pro Health Hamster & Gerbil Food at PETCO
The protein is really low in this mix and and fat is a tad high too. You have a Russian campbell dwarf (just judging by your avatar?). RC dwarfs are prone to diabetes, a lot of the foods in that mix are pretty high in sugar content. Unless your ham actually has diabetes you don't need to avoid all the foods completely but cutting down on them is a good idea. There's lots of corn products and peas along with some cane molasses too. Not a very diabetes-prone friendly food mix.
Besides that sunflower seeds should be somewhat limited but not just made out as treats. They are actually incredibly healthy! Check out this link for more info on how they are: Sunflower Seeds Re-examined | eGerbil . It's based on gerbils but it applies to hamsters just as much.

Re: Sunflower Seed Problem?
I know... yes, that's the mix. And by the by, I'm going to look for a new food once this stuff starts running low. That's a promise. I'm not happy with it at all, really. But I'm giving him a few seeds in his food every day but there were a LOT in it when I removed them. Thanks so much for the info.
