Question Good first hamster?

I’ve never had a hamster in my life. I’ve had many crested geckos though . But I’ve been researching and preparing myself to get a hamster.

Most people would recommend a Syrian as a first hamster however I don’t feel a Syrian would be right for me. I would love a dwarf hamster, winter white in particular.

But many people don’t recommend dwarf hamsters as a first time owner. Is there a reason they are not recommended?

Honestly it comes down to stereotypes as to why people often don't recommend dwarf hamsters. There's no perfect first hamster for everyone - we're all different and what species works best for some may not work best for an individual.

There's nothing wrong with starting with a dwarf hamster of any species, even a robo. Listen to your gut and if it's telling you a Syrian wouldn't be right don't get one.

i saw your other post too. But I think the main reason why people recommend syrian hamsters the most is purely because of their size and they are easier to tame and interact with. (for the most part)

Robos can be more skittish and just want to be left alone. i.e. my robo will come running if I have food, but other than that wants to be left alone to do his own thing. He doesn't have out of the cage time as he doesn't like it. But he is fun to watch.

My syrians just love free roaming and are very easy to interact with once they are tame.

As long as you are aware of this and your expectations match what a hamster may provide for you, then go with your gut and get whatever species you are drawn to, they all have pros and cons.

I think that there are a lot of misconceptions about what hamster is 'right' as a first hamster but a lot will depend on what you are looking for.
In my experience, a lot of people find that the larger size of a Syrian can mean that they feel easier to hold but I actually find that because I am so used to the Dwarf species, I find that I am more awkward when I'm holding a Syrian.

I tend to find that Syrians are more likely to beg for attention and they enjoy playtimes but they're less likely to sit still than most of the Chinese I've had. Chinese on the other hand can be very loving and trusting but some can be shy and they have been the species that can be the most challenging to get the right cage for. Robos are a lot of fun and I love watching mine when they're out in their cages but they're not a species for cuddling. A healthy, tame Robo is still not going to sit willingly on your hand for long.

I have found that Winter Whites are prone to being a bit overdramatic about things and are often the most vocal but honestly, they're all talk! Quite often at a show you'll hear a Winter White squarking over something minor but when you get them out, they're fine and will look at you as if they don't really know what all the fuss was about either.

Harmony is my first hamster and she is a syrian. Syrians are bigger than dwarfs, which might be why people recommend them as first hamsters. Really get the kind of hamster you think is best for you.
