Question new to dwarf hamsters , toy and food suggestions

hey all,
I havent been on here for months and month now as life has been crazy and so much has happened in such a short amount of time. sadly my Syrian hammy Toffee passed on the 25th of October at the ripe old age of 2 years and 4 months. Ngl it was so hard to say good bye to my little buddy but sadly thats how life works.

for a few month We would walk into our local PETS @ HOME and in the adoption section was a red eyed winter white dwarf hamster that had been there a while. and we spoke about getting him, but never actually did.
on Christmas eve i got home from work to find my husband had bought me the hamster and i was overjoyed to say the least and at the pet shop he was on his own for months in that small glass tank and i knew that i would be able to give him a much better life than the one he had .

im relatively new to dwarf hammy so any info you guys have for me would be much appreciated

i understand that dwarf hamsters are at risk of diabetes so what foods are suitable and what treats can i give him when spending time with him and taming him. The woman whom my husband adopted him from said he is around 3 months old but I believe i believe he is older.

im online and looking at toys , I have a few items in my basket but would like to ask for recommendations

also MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE

I have an adopted dwarf hybrid from pets@home who has diabetes, not that the shop had noticed his excessive drinking and peeing.
That is something to watch out for. It's easy to test with a kit bought from Amazon but hopefully yours is well and the majority of hamsters are.
Best to avoid sugary foods like all fruits, fresh and dried and carrots and stick to greens like kale, cucumber, broccoli, spinach etc in small amounts and introduced gradually.
Rodipet does a dwarf hybrid hamster mix which is higher in protein apparently and that's the one i feed my dwarf Percy.
Mealworms, brown linseeds, a bit of hard boiled egg and plain boiled chicken are things i give him now and again. Well, he gets the linseeds and a couple of mealworms daily as treats.

I have a Syrian, a dwarf and a Robo. They like similar things but in different sizes of course. The dwarves live underground and build tunnels in their Kaytee c&c substrate so use their houses more like a porch. They have logs, tunnels, bendy bridges, cork, a big sand bath is a must for a dwarf (i use tiny friends farm from p@h 3), a coconut hide, millet sprays, pebbles, clay pots etc. Dwarves are so small and love to run in and out things. Avoid anything with chains or fabric like hammocks and swings because tiny paws can get caught in them. Sputniks are a good and safe option should you be looking for something to hang off the roof.

What a lovely Christmas present for you and the hamster!

Zooplus has some good offers for cork tunnels and the Trixie long bendy bridges etc.

great thankyou, ile take that advice and use it and it realy was a fantatic suprise. I had 2 dwarfs around four years ago and to say the least they had a horrible life, they both lived less that a year, i would use fluffy cotton bedding in thier bed and they were in one of those habitrail OVO dwarf hamster habitat. looking back now I cringe to think about what i did wrong. this was all due to the fact i hadnt done my research in advance and didnt know that there was a minimum cage size. thank god i sorted myself out and the syrian i just had had an amazing live with plenty of enrichment and with me using the Barney cage he had plenty of room

I only started keeping hamsters in March this year and hadn't done my research so my Syrian is now on his second cage and fourth wheel! Everything i know now i have learned on this forum where people are ever so helpful.

Shops, shop assistants, books and the internet don't make life easy by supplying us with inadequate cages, incorrect and outdated information and sometimes downright dangerous hamster toys etc.

Rant over and back to your question of how often i feed my dwarves. Opinions vary on this one. Some people wait until all is eaten up then refill and some feed daily or every second day.
I feed my dwarves daily unless there's lots left and then i wait till the next evening. A scoopful or a heaped teaspoonful is sufficient for mine because they get fresh food and treats as well. I don't put all in their bowls but scatter feed some or hide it in hay, a pine cone, toys etc.

Best to cut the fresh veg very small because that way it won't rot but shrivel up when hidden somewhere in a hoard.

And don't forget a Whimzee dog chew, they love those and may well drag them to their nests. I get the xs or s toothbrushes but there are other shapes.

What's your hamster's name?

I can’t really add anything to excellent advice given other than to echo that our dwarf ham Boo loves his coconut hide and whimzees! He will drag a whimzee under his ramp where he has his one of his beds and we will hear him chewing on it. He loves to tunnel and have lots of hides and beds and will chose where to sleep as the mood takes him! Broccoli, chicken and mealworms are def his favourite treats. Look forward to hearing more about your adventures with sno-flake! X
