My hammy is changing colour....
Hello,
My russian dwarf hamster is changing colour. Does this mean he is a true winter white?
When I got him 7 weeks ago he was almost pure white with a silver dorsal stripe and two light silver streaks on his cheeks.
In the past two weeks, he has developed some grey spots growing out from his dorsal stripe which started out small but have grown much bigger.
I don't mind the colour change at all. I find it fascinating, but didn't expect it as I thought he was a hybrid. Do hybrids change color?
I'll pop up a pic later when I get home from work.

Yes Hybrids can change colour depending on how much of the Winter white genes they have in their history, The more brownish colour sounds like the summer coat is coming through

Ah cool! I'm excited. Its a gradual change but it's definitely happening. Hope he does go back white again though in the winter!

Yeah should go back.
Hybrids are amazing when they change from winter to summer coats then back.
I brought mine in summer and watching her change white was fascinating in winter.

Finally got a pic! That lower stripe wasn't there the other day. This is fascinating!! The second pic is of him when I got him at the end of May.

He's changing by the day now. So cool to watch. I wonder how he feels about it. Does he even notice?

Re: My hammy is changing colour....
I have a pure Winter White and he began to change into a winter coat in the middle of December but it wasn't a proper white... he just went this weird light grey colour. He's now back to his normal sapphire colour apart from a few patches that remained white. It was interesting to see his colour change although a bit frustrating as winter coats are penalised in shows.
Apparently even pure winter whites will change more than others even if they are kept in exactly the same circumstances which makes me think the amount of change could be genetic.
