Why Did My Hamster Die?
Hi, this is my first post on Hamster Central, and it’s a little bit of a downer. My Russian dwarf hamster, Destiny recently passed away just last Memorial Day. She was only about six months old and she had proper care. I miss her very much, and I am well aware that she won’t be coming back, but I am still curious about her sudden death. Here is how the day of her death went:
First I heard her running on her wheel, then drinking water and stuffing her cheeks with her food; KAYTEE Forti-Diet, Pro Health for Hamsters and Gerbils. The usual.
But I also noticed that she would move then pause and slowly fall, and the start going again as if nothing had happened. It didn’t worry me too much at the time, so I visited an amusement park with my family to celebrate my early birthday.
We weren’t gone too long, maybe about a few hours. But when we arrived home, she.... she was dead. There were no marks on her, no blood. Looking at pictures, I did notice that her color was darker. I checked her water and food. They both were about as full as they’d normally be. Her cage wasn’t cleaned too long ago.
I really don’t have a clue why she passed so early. If you have any information about why this happened, please share. Thanks so much.

Re: Why Did My Hamster Die?
I am not an expert but the falling you talked about did make me question whether your hamster had a stroke. I think sometimes you will never know why your hamster died and at such a young age. If you got your hammy from a pet store we just don't know the breading conditions and I guess this can cause genetic weaknesses in certain hamsters. I am sorry for your loss. Hugs.

Re: Why Did My Hamster Die?
Unfortunately Russian dwarfs have especially poor genetics as a result of hybridisation as well as the usual pet store over/inbreeding my best guess would be a stroke or heart failure

Re: Why Did My Hamster Die?
I am so sorry. This is so sad and hard for you, especially with such a young hamster. I agree that it sounds like it could have been a stroke or heart failure. The only blessing is she wouldn't have known much about it.
As the others say, sadly many hamsters are born with genetic predispositions due to interbreeding - she could well have been born with a weak heart or a heart defect of some kind.
There is nothing you could have done to prevent it, even if you had been there.
I am guessing you are in the US - and it is hard to find hamster breeders there, but if and when you get another hamster, you could maybe try and find a breeder - to have a good chance of healthy breeding practices and good genetic health. If not then sometimes smaller pet stores breed their own hamsters or use a breeder. The large ones - the breeding practices are not pleasant sometimes with hamsters being shipped in from various dubious places.
The positive is, your little dwarf hamster had a loving home with you for her short life, rather than cooped up in a pet store. Xxxx

Re: Why Did My Hamster Die?
Thanks so much guys. If only I’d known... maybe I could’ve made her life a little more comfortable... give her a bigger cage or a cozier home. Your help means so much to me. I couldn’t stop beating myself up about it. I thought maybe I accidentally hurt her, or she broke a bone. I don’t know. But at least I can say it probably wasn’t all my fault.

Re: Why Did My Hamster Die?
I am sure she was very happy in her home with you Many people start hamsters off in a smaller cage for taming and then upgrade them to a larger one.
I do hope another hamster will come along that needs you - and you can do start out with a good cage and lovely set up so they don't need upgrading later (any cage change can be stressful for them). Come on here when getting a cage sorted next time and we can give tips for the set up!

Re: Why Did My Hamster Die?
The size of her cage would have had nothing to do with what happened.
