Question on Personality/ Breeder
Hello! I was wondering about the different personalities between WW and Russian dwarf? I've seen mainly the differences between size and colour but never between personality that much. My poor babies Neko and Cinnamon passed away not too long ago and I was looking to get another hamster but couldn't decide between the two. From what I've heard WW seem to be nicer, but I don't know if that's true. I know that Syrians have the nicest and have the most tameable personalities, but, I prefer having hamsters that are smaller and faster, but not as fast as the robo.

Re: Question on Personality/ Breeder
To be honest personality & temperament is very much an individual thing rather than being dependent on species.
Do you have a breeder in mind for a WW? If you can go to a breeder then you can see the hams & should be able to handle them, see the parents & get a good idea of temperament.
If you're buying form a shop then you won't get a WW anyway, only a Russian hybrid.

Re: Question on Personality/ Breeder
I think it's very difficult to generalise a hamster's personality based on species alone and in my time, I've come across Winter Whites that are calm and some that are really quite lively and nippy and I've handled some Russian Campbells that have been completely charming and others who have been rather feisty.
A good breeder will usually have a good idea on the hamster's temperament by the time that they're made available for rehoming and they'll have spent time making sure that they're used to being held but if you're going to a pet shop then it'll be harder to be sure of what you're going to get. Almost all of the Russian/Winter White hamsters sold in pet shops will be a Hybrid to some degree (regardless of how they label them) so you may see some elements of both species in your hamster.

Re: Question on Personality/ Breeder
Thank you so much for the help. The last thing that I am looking for is an actual breeder to get the hamster from. I've been looking around and I can't find anything in my area for getting a baby WW. I've mainly found them in England, Canada, or a pet shop. I was wondering if you know anyone or any website that sells baby WW's in my area? (Bay Area, San Francisco is about 30 min away from me.)

Re: Question on Personality/ Breeder
If you can't find a good breeder which I know are very few & far between in the US then you really aren't going to find .a WW, chances are if someone is selling WW's they will actually be hybrids.

Re: Question on Personality/ Breeder
That is good news There are breeders and breeders. Some people breed hamsters but aren't actually "breeders". A true breeder will know the ancestry and pedigree of the hamsters and they will be pure Winter White or Pure dwarf Campbells. If it's just someone who calls themselves a breeder and doesn't know the ancestry and pedigree then they could well be hybrid dwarf hamsters - which can look like either Winter Whites or Campbells but still be a hybrid of both species.
The only real difference to you, in having one is a pet, is hybrids have more specialised requirements for diet as they can be prone to diabetes. So a sugar free hamster mix is a good idea. Burgess dwarf supahamster is a good option - I think Amazon sells it.
