Talking Meet Liberty!

Hey guys!

So yesterday, we adopted a lovely agouti Winter White hybrid male named Liberty or, Libby for short! A few weeks back, I was ready to own another hamster again after the passing of my past hamster, Comet. After many calls, we finally found a hamster up for adoption at our local pet store. So on the Fourth of July, (America’s Independence Day, hence the name Liberty; the Statue of Liberty) we went to go pick up this little guy and bring him home! All went well and now he is fast asleep is his little burrow he made. He is very shy and timid and is going to take a long time getting used to me (as he froze last night for 8 minutes straight when he saw me). He loves to dig and burrow and is eating well.

Now, let me get to the not so good part about him. He screams, or that is the best I can describe it. I’ll try my best to upload a video but I’m having a hard time. We think he dose it when he is scared and stressed as he did it when we woke him up to transport him from his petstore cage to his travle cage, on the car ride home, and when we closed the curtains which makes some noise. We don’t think it is caused by pain or is neralogical problems. He also might have white tooth but can’t be certain as the lighting was awful at the time and only saw his teeth for a second. I’ll keep my eye on it. He is going to be a great addition to my life!

Congrats on getting little Liberty!
Screaming or screeching isn't at all unusual in new hams, it's nothing to worry about, it is from stress or fear but coming into a new home usually is quite stressful for them so just give him a day or two to settle, talk to him quietly if you are near the cage but otherwise just leave him be & only do the essentials like food & water in the cage, you won't even need to worry about spot cleaning for a few days at least by which time he'll probably be beginning to settle a little more.

Thanks Cypher for the kind words to Libby! The screaming has stopped for now and he is settling in well.

Hey again guys,

I think that Libby may have a respiratory infection or some sort of breathing problem. Today I was in the room with him just listing if I could hear anything in him breathing and I heard a clicking and almost a wheezeing noise. He is very untame and is petrified of me so I can’t get a closer look. I’m planning on taking him to the vet and was wonder if anyone had any suggestions for traveling with him. He has had just one look at me before and froze so I think it would cause him ab great amount of stress on the way to the vets and when the vet is checking him over. Any one have any suggestions to keep him calm and relax?

Is the room where the cage is cool enough? I was just wondering if the heat might be causing a problem (if it is hot where you are!).
His breathing certainly shouldn't be audible so if it isn't something like overheating then he will need to see the vet.
It will be stressful for him but there isn't really any way to avoid that totally, see if you can get him to climb into something rather than having to catch him then put him in a carrier with some substrate, enough to make him feel safe & comfortable & able to burrow down a bit but not so much you have trouble digging him out at the vets!
I usually put my carrier in a large bag as that helps keep it darker, you could partially cover it but make sure he has enough ventilation.
If it is a respiratory infection & the vet prescribes antibiotics the easiest way to give them is to mix the dose with a little ham safe baby food, about half a teaspoon is plenty. Russian hams seem to like the veg ones better than the meat ones.
Good luck with him, hope he'll be ok.

Thank you so much cypher. His environment has been cool even though it’s 100 F (37 C) outside! I’ll try putting a cover over the travler. We are probably bringing him to the vet Tuesday or Monday. I’ll keep you updated.

I forgot to ask you what substrate you're using & if it's different to what he was on before you got him, some hams can have an allergic reaction to wood shavings & do better with a paper based substrate so that might be something to consider.
If you do think it's a respiratory infection try to get him to the vet as soon as you can, being so tiny they can take a turn for the worst very quickly & the sooner they can get meds if they need them the better.

In the petstore, he was on carefresh and now he is on Kaytee Clean and Cozy which is dust free. I managed to get a vet appointment for tomorrow and will update you later. Thanks for the advice cypher. I’m hoping he will be okay!

Kaytree clean & cosy should be totally fine so it won't be an allergy issue.
Good to hear you were able to get an earlier vet appointment, hope it goes ok.

Update on Libby: The vet couldn’t hear anything wrong with Libby’s breathing. But the vet couldn’t be sure as hamsters are such tiny animals and don’t have the loudest or breaths. The vet was also surprised on how knowledgeable I was considering when I asked the vet if Libby had white tooth. The vet said just to keep an eye on his breathing and if it gets louder or worse, then come back.
Libby did really well when the vet tech was scruffing him. I did feel bad though as I forgot to get the food out of his cheeks before they scruffed him as he started to empty his cheek pouches on his own. They also said he seemed very vocal. I’m just glad everything is okay. Im planning on giving Libby his first piece of lettuce (yes, I’m going to introduce vegetables really slowly into his diet) tonight!
