Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
Oh they are so handsome! Hmm Quigley screeched once shortly after we brought him home. I accidentally banged his cage and he screamed! It was the most awful sound and I felt terrible. Thankfully, we haven't had any repeats of that. But, I can see why you would feel worried about picking Sparky up when he seems in such obvious distress.
One thing I would say, is that I joined Tuftyfluff's Facebook group when I thought I'd be getting a hamster from her and she has posted quite a few times about a hamster who screeched whenever humans came near it. She was training the hamster out of it by doing frequently taming box sessions with it and picking it up despite the screeching and it sounded as though the screeching was improving. I trust Tuftyfluff, which is why I mentioned this, but I totally get it if you want to go for a less direct approach.

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
Winter Whites are rather a vocal species at times and often I've found that they're the ones making all the noise on the show bench and often about very little at all. I remember Book Stewarding at a show earlier this year and I moved the show pen slightly, which was enough to start it's occupant off with the squarking.
I can't speak for Winter Whites but when I've brought home Chinese from other breeders, I've felt that it's important to keep up with the handling sessions rather than give them the often advised week to settle in. To go from being handled once or twice daily to having nothing for several days can actually be more unsettling than leaving them and I tend to keep the sessions relatively short to begin with, picking them up, letting them sit on or explore my hands and allowing them to hop out of my hands into a carrier or small box with a nice layer of substrate in it if they feel the need.

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
Thank you Fluffagrams, AP, SKB, Lizzy, CMB, Coco and Cypher
They're such cute little guys and I'm so happy to have them. I decided last night to try taking him out again even if he did screech. We took the top part of his cage off and sat with the base on our knee so we could just rustle the fitch around (He's hard to find being so small and under so much fitch, he's a real tunneler). We found him and he took a worm from me. He never screeched once and I was so happy. He still didn't seem overly happy at being out the cage but he let us handle him and he had a run around on us before sitting for a couple of pics. The only time he sits still for a pic is when he's sitting beside ham-dad lol.
Thank you cypher, AP and Fluffagrams for sharing your words of wisdom, you've helped to reassure me that I'm doing the right thing. That is a good idea about having a small box or carrier that he can jump in to, I think I'll try that with him tonight.
Since I'm hear I may as well share a couple of pretty terrible pictures of him I didn't want to put the light on (or the flash obviously) but you can see him just lol.

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
I don’t know why, but I find that last picture particularly cute. His shape reminds me of a little bat somehow!
Good news about the absence of screeching last night. Out of curiosity, when does he screech? Is it when he can see you, or only when you are digging around for him in the fitch? If it’s the latter, then he may be screeching because he can’t see what scary predator is coming to get him (and if he could see it was you, would not screech). If this is the problem, then the screeching may resolve itself when he learns that you are the only one who digs him out and also when he gets brave enough to come out of his own volition.

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
Look at that adorable little hammy-butt
Do they live together or separately? I didn't see you mention anything about that in this thread but I apologize if you already answered that question just wondering!

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
It's so nice to hear that the little guys are getting used to you and that you managed to hold him without screeching! On the first photo he looks like a fluffy potato

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
Such softness, fluffiness, cuteness and so much loveliness. So happy for you BP that Sparky didn't screech at you.
I remember Twinkle screeched at me a few times and it was so loud.

Re: Spartacus and Snapdragon
Lovely photos of him It does sound as though he's slowly settling & getting more used to you, it's so sweet that he likes to sit next to ham dad like that!
