Question New to WW

Hi I'm Mela,
I'm looking for information about WW hybrid's diseases.
I'm new to hamster care and in fear of all the problems hybrids are prone at, I was fully ready on getting a Robo.
Turn's out that there's apparently no robos available in the whole Italy -_-; but a cute one eyed WW stole my heart today, and I'm kinda freaking out now.

For my first time I really wanted to stay out of trouble but I really like him.

So the point is I want to know from your experiences how difficult it is to make them stay healthy, the cons of owning a hybrid and the early sign of the most common diseases.

I'm getting all the information I need but I can't get an idea of how common it really is for them to get sick.

Just so you know I still haven't made a move to adopt him, and if I don't feel ready for it I will step back and wait for a robo.

Thank you

Hi, I wouldn't be scared. I have an agouti female WW who is going to be 3 yrs old this summer. She didn't eat any special diet & actually got sugary treats as a youngster till I learned that's not healthy for her.

Reason being as we all know that WW hybrids are diabetes prone. I owned a white robo, Latte, who died of a tumor just before her 2nd birthday, had her PTS.

So my WW is living a long healthy life. So robos can have health problems just like hybrids. It's their genetics mostly, imo

Good luck with your decision

Thank you.
just dropping a photo cause he's killing me.

I should be alarmed by the fact that he's missing an eye? I mean for other internal malformations.

Was it from a fight? HammyLux (You Tube) just adopted a dwarf with an eye problem where the hammy, Patch, can't blink or close one of his eyes.

I wouldn't let it stop me, it doesn't mean he will have other defects. He is very cute

I've asked but for now they didn't reply.

I've seen your hamster in the other thread, she's so cute.

I wouldn't let the fear of disease stop you from getting him. As long as he's fed a good diet, monitored, and given plenty of exercise, you should never have any issues. If you really like him, get him! I personally recommend hybrids for beginners as I just think they're the happiest medium you can possibly get when it comes to the different species out there. Having one eye isn't going to change much either, hamsters are virtually blind anyways! Whatever you do decide, please share pics

Hello, Mela! What a gorgeous fluffy he is! I wouldn't let your concern over what possible diseases a hammy could get be a deterrent in you getting a hammy that has already touched your heart. You appear to be quite the conscientious and caring pet owner, so you will be sure to care for any hammy properly and attentively, monitor its exercise and health, and give treats in moderation. In my opinion, if you already are drawn to one and your heart is calling out for you to care for it, give that hammy a loving, forever home with you. As long as you keep in mind all of the potential health risk factors but don't become overwhelmed or consumed with them, all should be fine. Many people on HC have or have had WW with no problems at all. Regardless of whether you decide to get this one or wait for a robo in the future, please share pics whenever you have a chance and he/she is settled in his/her new home. Good luck with your decision, follow your heart and gut feeling, and have fun being a soon-to-be hammy parent.

Thank you all!
They responded to me today. They say that the missing eye was an accident, he wasn't born with just one eye. And they told me that the missing eye, or better the vet fee caused by the accident was the reason why his previous owner surrendered him to the hamster care association that I'm in contact with; they didn't want to pay for it.

They also said that he wasn't born from a casual home breeding; I don't know what they mean by this, cause they can't tell me if he's a hybrid or a pure ww, I doubt the latter, and they have no information on the parents(I asked them if he was son of siblings).

But they assured me that he passed the medical check, and that he's healthy.

So in the end I did made the first step on adopting him today, and I have to thank you all for the support
