Larry-Jasper is doing well. We've had lots of cuddles and play time in the last few days, while I've been at my Dad's.

He's so incredibly tame!

This morning he had broccoli, which he really enjoyed. His favourite is red pepper though. I saw him enjoy some freeze-dried chicken on Friday night.

Larry-Jasper will be 1 next month, on the 27th April. I'm not too sure on his present budget yet, but I really want to order him a Leif house and the wooden hamster play pen from Zooplus. I would like to order stuff from RatRations or Rodipet, but I think it may be a bit pricey and I still haven't been forgiven for my Christmas present import duties. Any other suggestions?

Also trying to convince my Dad to change the unit under Larry-Jasper's cage to an Ikea Kallax unit because it will fit perfectly and I will have more storage for hamster toys .

My Dad might be moving very far away in Autumn to a new house, where I can get a bigger cage, so I am exploring potential options for that. I would also be allowed a second hamster, which I already have a thread about. I'm debating on a number of 100cm cages. My favourite is the Savic Hamster Plaza Knockdown, because of the HUGE door. The other contenders are an Alexander, Barney or another DIY Ikea cage: the Linmon cage which is a bit bigger than the other cages. Any other cage suggestions?

Also looking at a new big travel cage, as I HATE the Pets At Home large wire cage with a passion. It is an ideal size, but everything else about it is terrible. The clips for the wire to the base keep pinging open. I want something slightly bigger than the 40cm by 60cm. Maybe 60 by 50 or 70 by 40. Any cage suggestions for that?

Thanks

I can hardly believe LJ is almost a year already!

If you're on a tight budget I'd suggest getting the metal playpen rather than the wooden one, I've always used those with my Russian hams & they work really well, I think you'd get more play space for your money that way if you have room for one.

I've had my eye on the Savic Plaza cage for a while now too, I think it's about the best cage that size, the door is similar to the door on the Hamster heaven & savic mickey & it really is a huge bonus, makes life a lot easier! I really like the overall design too, the only thing to consider (other than price!) is the height of the cage, setting up a tall cage like that for a dwarf (any species) takes a lot of thought but I'm sure LJ would love it.

Serendipity had a good holiday cage but I can't remember which cage it was or what the exact size was, it might be too big for what you want but maybe worth asking her.

I can't believe it either! It seems like yesterday I found out he had been born!

I'm not really on too much of a tight budget, it just how much money I can convince my Dad that Larry-Jasper needs for his birthday, as he had a nice big Christmas budget . I love the look of the wooden one and how easily it dismantles, to fit next to the cage. I've had a guinea pig version of the metal play pens and it was awful! We ended up binning it. I'm also scared Larry-Jasper will escape from it, after he tried to escape from his cage a few months ago.

Yep! Definitely agreee on the points of the Savic Plaza. With the height, I imagine I could make a sort of massive second level to give Larry-Jasper a ton of extra space while making it challenging to climb with bits to climb to and from (he loves having climbing stuff). If I were to make a second level, if I remember rightly, I would need kiln dried pine?

Thanks, I will ask Serendipity. I think it might have been the Savic Mickey.

I never had any problems with the metal playpens, maybe a different make to the guinea pig ones? They can only escape if you put something handy for them to climb on close to the edge but if you prefer the wooden one go with that.
Yes, kiln dried pine is the best thing to use for making shelves or levels.
Serendipity's holiday cage definitely wasn't the Mickey, that was the cage she had before the Barney.

Happy Birthday Larry-Jasper, it's amazing how time flies. It certainly sounds like he's going to be well and truly spoilt.

Sooty used to have a metal playpen and for what my sister paid for it, it did the job just fine. I don't even think she tried to climb out of it but as Cypher said, if you prefer the wooden one then go with what you prefer.

I've got two of the Pets at Home Large Wire Cages and have really noticed a difference in the quality of the build compared to Jessie's Hamster Heaven. I've still got Victoria in one and although she's happy in it, I find that the cage top has to be aligned in just the right position or else they just don't attach properly.

Are you looking for a wire cage?

Fluffagrams, you're over a month early with the birthday wishes, Larry-Jasper turns one on 27th April.

It's hard to stick with a budget when there is always so much nice stuff to buy especially when he's such a cute boy. Tell you're Dad that LJ will only be 1 once so it's important to spoil him

I actually ordered the savic plaza over the weekend for Boris after much indecision (both the Barney's I ordered arrived broken. I think I'm unlucky with cages lol) between the plaza and the ferplast criceti 100. The ferplast one was a bit too wide to fit on the unit so the savic it was. It should arrive tomorrow so I'm looking forward to seeing what Boris thinks about it

Ooops silly me, now I've re-read Chesca's message I see it now. That's what I get for reading things too fast when I'm still half asleep.

I'll remember that date (Henry, my sister's Syrian shares the same birthday) and be back with an appropriately timed birthday greeting on the day.
