Default How well do Winter Whites do in pairs?

I have been wondering if the keeping of dwarfs in pairs is influenced by the species and whether Winter Whites have a better success rate than hybrids etc

I know there are a lot of opinions around about what makes a successful pairing (e.g. two of everything, no levels etc) but I was also wondering if species made any difference so your feedback will be appreciated.

Do you think it would be worth setting up a Poll about pairs and get an idea of experiences and what people find works etc?

I have no idea to be honest but I imagine it depends not so much on the hamsters (brother or sister pairs) but their environment (cage), how large/small it is, the way it`s accessorised (i,e...not changed around too much or at all) and their individual characters. Pure bred winter whites are beautiful but finding a breeder with long term status might be the problem. They could then give you more details on their lines and behaviours.

Anyone who wants a pair of dwarf hamsters can always give it a try, but most end up separated sadly. Robos seem to be the worst culprits! I wonder why....

Pairs probably rely on one another for company and enrichment, so human intervention may well be one cause that interrupts that harmony if they are handled a lot or separated. Stress/upset of balance could tip them over the edge. Many people who have kept pairs report that they can be scatty or don`t like being handled. Or one is fine while the other is nervous. One could be dominant over the other too.

The rules that apply to keeping pairs can be all well and good, but whether it`s enough to keep them together is the question. x

Thanks racinghamster. The problem is that the "rules" vary from person to person as much as the hamsters personalities I believe.

It was just a thought that maybe we could try to spot trends as I was asked, by a prospective new owner for my pups, if there were any stats that would indicate the chance of fall out if he got a pair. I had to say that I had no idea how many pairs or groups are together for life etc...so it got me wondering if there was anything we as a forum could do to get a better answer than..."it depends....." after all we must have quite a cross section of owners and experience on here.

I know what you mean. I don`t think there are any historic records giving success with pairs, although some breeders may keep records of this (as they should do) to gain some perspective on their gene pool, but I imagine that takes a bit of doing and keeping in contact with every owner who buys the babies and their willingness to stay in contact. x
