Thank you all! I'm loving having my little hams. Making them little toys and finding what foods they like.
The wheel has continued to be an occasional napping spot for them, alone and together. I still don't get how it's more comfortable than the bedding or their nest, but I love being able to see them sleeping! Getting photos of them without waking them is a challenge, but when I catch them, o gosh.

Unhappy Re: My Russian Romans

I was woken by hamster screeching this morning, and found Romulus pinning Remus down. Remus looked dead and my heart stopped. He didn't move when touched but once I'd scooped him up he quickly flipped back onto his feet. His fur was all wet on his stomach, like Rom had been licking him? Or maybe he was biting but not getting any purchase? It seems odd that licking would be a dominance behaviour...

I also found a scab under his arm when I was examining him. Which could mean they had fought previously and drawn blood, or he scratched him self too hard. I don't know, but either way I decided that I needed to separate them. I've come close to doing it before, but then they would go back to sleeping together, or ignoring each other at least, and I'd let them stay. But faking death is only done under severe stress I'd imagine.

They've both run on their wheel a bunch, stress running I suppose. And now they are back to sleeping in their bedding apart in their new cages. Hopefully they'll both be happier now that they have space to themselves. I'm just sad I had to do it

What a frightning moment for Remus and yourself. You did the right thing separating them, thank goodness you were there, over the next week you'll see Remus's confidence grow and you'll get to see much more of his character and personality.
Some people think it's them playing but, if not intervened it can lead to death.
Keep us posted on Remus's progress.xx

Thank you Lizzy <3 it's hard to separate but seeing him like that. It became a lot easier. If he had truly been dead I would have been heart broken and guilty beyond measure. I was given a second chance, and there was no way I could ignore that.

It may be that Remus is showing his age and becoming more frail now. Sometimes a cagemate will sense this and turn on a weaker one so it's best to separate them now. Glad you caught them and did it quickly and hope they settle well alone.

Thank you souffle. It's hard to know since I only know their minimum age, but they could be older. So I don't know when to expect aging. But I'm glad I separated them, and aside from lots of water bottle issues in the new cage they seem to be settling in ok so far. I'm trying to give them extra love and attention to make up for their separation.

You're doing a great job! Remus will start to show his character over the coming weeks.
They each have their own bachelor pad!

They do have much more room to dig and burrow now, which they both really love. And I feel better leaving treats in their bins, since I know they can't fight over them, so I think they are liking the ability to stash treats for when they want them! Rom was out running on his flying saucer for quite awhile yesterday. It feels a lot better knowing they are safe when I'm not in the room. And your assurances really help me feel I made the right decision, thank you
