Any Winter White Advice
Hi everyone,
I'm new to this community and hamster-owning. I haven't got a hamster yet but I should be getting one in about a month. I have been researching for about 3 years (I've waited that long) because I wasn't allowed one (cos I have 2 guinea pigs) BUT I am finally allowed. I am really excited .
I want to get a Winter White dwarf (pedigree). I am getting the Ikea Billy Extension Cage.
I would really appreciate any advice or tips with dwarves because this will be my first hamster. Also any name suggestions would be welcome. I am planning on getting a male but I might get a female depending on availability (I want to adopt from TuftyFluff Hamsters). So far, I've got the names Larry-Jasper (had that picked out for 1.5 years), Amino, Opal, Sapphire and Willow.
Thanks for reading

Re: Any Winter White Advice
Welcome to HC.
I started with one hammie and am now setting up to get myself a hamstery prefix. I am breeding Winter Whites and Robos. My first pedigree litter of Winter Whites is just over two weeks old at the moment and they are precious!
I like the gemstone names you have selected as my new hammies are all having names associated with rocks and gemstones. Amethyst is the Mum and Smokey Quartz the Dad of my current litter.
Winter Whites can be a bit fast and harder to hold than a Syrian initially but practice makes perfect. Some, however, just like to "splat" and lie flat on my hand and get stroked. Each have their own personalities and even now with the pups I can see a bit of individuality in them which is captivating.
I am sure you will really get to love your new hamster, whether it be boy or girl.

Thanks for the handling tips . I have held a winter white hybrid recently. It was his first time being handled (lucky me but he's not my hamster) and he was super calm. He was climbing everywhere but he didn't seem stressed .

Re: Any Winter White Advice
Winter Whites are great hamsters . Some of these tips are if you decide to get two: be prepared to separate them because even though they seem to be getting along now, they can turn on each other quickly because of territorial reasons - so what you heard is true. I have winter whites and it couldn't be more true. I suggest getting a spare cage. It can be used as a permanent separation cage or sometimes if they can get along but they got in a fight, sometimes they can still be heated so you can also use it as a "time out" cage. So you put the aggressive one in there for a little while and after that, you can put them back in their cage and monitor their behavior towards each other. If they seem to be getting along (sleeping together again, eating together, not avoiding each other) then you can probably leave them together again. Though it can change as I said.
Another good thing to keep in mind is that since they're territorial, get two of everything. Get two wheels, water bottles, food dishes (or a large dish so they can eat together), a couple of huts to sleep. also make sure some of them have two entrances so if they get in a fight, one of them can corner the other so they can escape from that. Get a lot of toys too.
know they are very skittish. You need to tame them if you want to be able to hold them without them trying to escape. Since you just got them, give them time to adjust to their new home. Don't put your hand in the cage or try to touch them yet. You can reach in to change their food or water, but try to leave them alone. After a little while, give them treats. Put them down near them

Hi thanks for the advice on pairs. I really wanted to get a pair but I feel my cage is too small for two hamsters. Hoping to get the hamster in the next six weeks from Tufty Fluff so fingers crossed he'll be really tame already. I have got so many toys already and got to finish the cage today complete with bedding and toys.

Re: Any Winter White Advice
I hope your newbie is a chilled as my current 4 week old pups are...already hand tame and just want to be stroked and held...with a little walk from hand to hand at times!
Never known such laid back babies..I sometimes have to actually nudge them off my hand to get them to go back into their cage!
Just to keep you in the mood here is a recent photo of the little loves

Re: Any Winter White Advice
Slatted I think I saw that picture on another thread already but those hammy babies really are gorgeous. You're so lucky that they are so tame already. There's a teeny part of me that regrets not getting my dwarf from you but I really needed that extra time to prepare since the cage was only officially finished yesterday. I really am in love with those cute little blobs of fluff though (how I described my guinea pigs before they got chubby 😬😂 . Good luck with them! Just out of interest was there only four in that litter and are you planning on keeping any? I could not bear to part with such perfect creatures but that's me. I guess you have to let them go as a breeder.

Re: Any Winter White Advice
Yes, I have put a photo on another thread, about this litter and how I did not know about them until last week!
This litter was only four, at least by the time I found them, I think they are all girls but will double check again when I separate them in the next couple of days.
Seems they were born tame as from the first time I handled them they sought attention rather than wanting to run..though they still enjoy hide and seek in the cage!
I was just getting you in the mood for little WW and am so proud of these I seem to want to show them off more than others! I am not sure why! lol
I rehomed all the 7 that were available earlier and have another litter just born to their Mum (this litter's Aunt) so I must be strong and not keep too many but this lot seem special so I am tempted to keep one.
You get certain ones that cling to your heart, and these little paws are really clingy
