Re: Winter White?
There's a huge discussion going on what is be best store bought food mix. A lot of people agree that you wont find 'the perfect hamster mix' and therefore they make their own mix.
Generally you would want it to contain around 16-19% protein, 5-6% fat, no sugar at all, and around 10% fiber.
I have used burgess supa hamster for a long time, but recently started using a new mix as my hamster is picky and as burgess doesnt have the largest variety.
Harry hamster/Hazel hamster should be really nice as well - and so are a lot of other mixes.
From my understanding, winter whites arent as prone to diabetes as other dwarfs. I would still keep them on a mainly sugar free diet and then give them a small treat now and then that would contain sugar. But I'm overly safe and I'm sure other people on here would be able to advice better.
As for knowing if the hamster is a hybrid or not: the main rule is that if it doesnt have a pedigree that proves it is a winter white or campbell - then it's a hybrid (:

Re: Winter White?
Shelly where are you? I can't remember & best food recommendations depend on where you live.
Where do you plan to get your ham? If from a pet shop & not from a breeder who can give you a history your ham will definitely be a hybrid & hybrids are prone to diabetes so you do need to take care with their diet.

Re: Winter White?
OK, so you didn't say anything about a breeder so I take it you'll be looking at getting a hybrid & will have to be careful with the diet which does mean you may struggle a bit to find suitable food as there don't seem to be any really good dwarf foods in the US.
Harry/Hazel hamster is a bit too chunky for dwarfs really they tend to do better with a mix containing small seeds although you could consider an all in one like Oxbow & supplement with some small seeds for variety, or you could look into lab blocks.
Check out what foods are available & look for something that has no sugars, fruit (or fruit juice concentrate).
What cage & wheel do you have?
Don't be fooled by their size! They do need a fair bit of space & wheel that's around 8" depending on which wheel you go for.
