It was funny to watch, but I removed them pretty quickly so he could enjoy the rest of his playtime.

Re: Meet Ptolemy
I have made great progress with Ptolemy since I last posted. He now comes to the front of his cage when he hears me and will let me pet him inside his tank! He is also happy to perch on my shoulder for about 3 to 5 minutes, and takes all his favorite treats from my hand now.
Unfortunately he still will not climb onto my hand in his cage (not a big deal), but will when in his play pen or exploring my desk. I also cannot put my hand flat on his substrate without him smacking or trying to bite it. I find this odd since he doesn't fuss if I need to pick him up from above. He definitely has a very different personality from other hamsters I have had in the past. I will try to post updated pictures this weekend.

Re: Meet Ptolemy
Such great progress! Some hamsters don't like being put on the hand, maybe he smells something on your hand like something you've eaten. I always use antibacterial handwash or wipes befoe handling mine.
It much just take a bit longer for him to trust your hand.

Re: Meet Ptolemy
Despite Ptolemy's dislike of the experience, I managed to get a couple pictures of him. I had to get the shot of him sleeping in the sand bath when I saw him, too cute!
Thin Lizzy:
I do wash before and after I handle each of our hammies, but I think the smell of them bothered him. I finally found a handwash he didn't react to back in August (and stocked up!). I was thinking this might be a territorial issue since our problem only seems to be inside his cage.

Re: Meet Ptolemy
So Ptolemy was recently given a new tank with much more floor space, and he is thrilled! His favorite spot is his sand bath, and he is pretty happy with the flying saucer too. He is also definitely my tunneler.
I have noticed his coat changing as winter is getting closer, but the odd thing is his coat is getting darker. Has anyone had this happen before? His new cage is closer to a heating vent, but his coat was darkening in the previous tank which was not near any vents, so I do think the new locating has much to do with this.
Interesting to note Millie, my Sunfire hybrid, is going through a coat change also. She has gone from bright orange to light cream, and her tank is directly beside his so they get the same temperature change exposures. Any thoughts would help as I am completely baffled.

Re: Meet Ptolemy
Lucky Ptolemy! Sounds as though he's enjoying his new home!
I've found all bar one of my hybrids have changed colour but it's not a seasonal change that reverses more that their colour changes with age, my "sunfire" ham is now almost pure white but it's been a gradual change over time.
Some do retain the seasonal change though so all you can do is watch & wait!
