Default Winter whites

I've been reading that winter whites change colour from grey to white in the winter.
Do they change colour?

in the wild winter whites change colour to blend in with the snow, most caged winter whites don't change fully if at all

Yeah, as PW said, they would naturally turn white in winter to blend in with snow.

Most domestic WW won't change colour, but sometimes their coats can lighten to coincide with periods of light. If a hamster has been exposed to only a few hours of light a day, their body's would instinctively respond as to winter photoperiods.
My Todd was almost white when I first got him as in the shop it's quite dim out the back with the hamsters, but his grey has come through now.

This is actually a good way to determine a hybrid. A hybrid with strong WW genes would change colour somewhat, but one with lots of Campbells in it's line may not. Hybridization effects the ability to change colour.

Here is a great example. This was Hugo one of my Sapphire WW boys. Some of mine changed a lot others less.

All white

Splodgey

Almost there here he had a tiny lttle bit of white left on his nose

Complete!

Wow he's lovely. I'd like one that changes colour.

I have a hybrid, Izzy, whose colouring is sapphire. Or was when I first got her. Then she got patches of white, then almost entirely white and now she's gone back to pretty much her original colouring. All since April!

Wow! I've noticed Lilo has gotten a little darker but nothing as extreme as this!
