Question Hello! New soon to be Dwarfowner with some questions

Hiya all, im all new here and i was thinking about buying myself a little furry friend, after some reading i will go for the WW dwarf

My question to you is about caging really for my furry friend, i got two cages for free from a friend. A "Savic Rody" And another cage with the measurements: 31 x 18 x 14 inches (80x45x34cm.) , i am a bit scared of the little one escaping from the big one tho , the spacing between the bars are about 0.40 (1 cm)

I want to go for the one with alot of space, but how safe is it? should i buy a fatter dwarf maybe? :P

I know that adult winter whites will be safe with 1cm bar spacing, I don't know about 1cm bars for a younger winter white though.

And while I'm posting, if you want a purebred winter white you'll need to be really careful about where you get it. Most "winter white" breeders really sell hybrids (a cross between campbells and winter whites). I strongly suspect that does include at least one advertised in the breeder section of this forum.
(Can't name them as I suspect it'd be breaking forum rules)

The savic rody is absolutely fine for a ww I'd avoid the big bar one whilst they are a baby, but you can always try it when they get older if you feel they'd like some more space.

Okey so maybe i should use the rody at first and when it gets older i can try it in the bigger cage? since i have them both i might as well try them

What? thats just crazy? is it ignorance or just lack of knowledge? :O I must really learn how to tell the difference....

yeah i think i will do that, Rody as a baby and the other one when it gets older, it seems like the safer choice ^_^

There're a few reasons people sell hybrids and claim they're winter whites. Could be "they'll sell better" or even that they imported a ham and other countries have different definitions of hybrid.
Sadly looks alone can't tell if a ham is a hybrid. A lot of the time its best to get one from a trusted breeder and check the pedigree before buying.

hi axeria

i'm in the UK and i have a pure winter white hamster from a NHC show breeder who is passionate about keeping pure lines of both winter whites and campbell's. she came with a pedigree which traces her family tree, i suspect if it went far enough, it would trace back to wild caught winter whites.

if you buy from a petshop or hobby breeder who does not show their winter whites or have pedigrees - you will most likely be taking on a hybrid dwarf. i also have a hybrid, and have had 2 others in the past and they are lovely little things

but if you really want a pure winter white, you will need to do your research!

Oh i did not know that! Thanks for informing me both of you
Are there ways to see the difference? And do hybrids make as good pets as pure breds?
Do you have any links to info bout hybrids? Dont have any breeders near by so will have to buy from petstore

Would you recomend getting one or two?

Thank you for exelent answers

We have a few hybrids... The bigger differences are that hybrids are prone to diabetes so its best to avoid sugar in the diet as much as possible, and that hybrids can be prone to more health problems, plus I think I heard somewhere they have a shorter lifespan sometimes.

Er... Its up to you. Hybrids aren't known as the best to keep in pairs/groups, but we've found our hybrids can be amazing together... Or they can not be. All depends on the hams really.
If you did get two you'd need to make sure the cage was suitable, no shelves, two wheels, two entrances/exits to houses e.t.c. Single dwarf hamsters can have more variation in cage layout sometimes.
Oh and never assume two will stay together. If you get a pair please be prepared to separate them and keep them alone if they need it.

Hello and welcome to Hamster Central. First, let me say that you completely cracked me up with the question about getting a fatter dwarf . That was wonderful. As for whether to get one or two hammies, just consider this; first, you're new at this. 2nd, although pet shops, and even some breeders who should know better, will tell you that they should be in pairs, that isn't necessarily so. They absolutely CAN live as a pair, and some do. However, quite a lot don't. They start fighting, and one can get severely hurt before a new hammy owner realizes what's going on. So, unless you are willing to have a second cage set up for an emergency separation, get one for now. A hamster won't be "lonely". In fact, he'll be quite content in his little castle. If you decide you love hammies, and that may very well happen, you can always try a pair another time. If you are comfortable with the idea of arranging for two cages, then try the pair, but keep a very sharp eye out for trouble. Any questions you have about feeding and taming will have many hammy folks helping you out. So, happy hammy hunting, whatever you decide to do.
