Ahem... Just for the record in rare cases hamsters can be lonely. We had one who was unhappy and refused to be happy nomatter what we did until she temporarily got a cagemate. Its really, really rare, especially as not many get the exact situation we did where nothing else will work but it can happen.

And I'm not sure there're any concrete stats on how many pairs do/don't work when living in good conditions for a pair e.t.c. While I fully agree they can and sometimes do fall out, that owners need to be prepared for it and need to have spare cages e.t.c... I don't think its fair to imply that we can safely assume most pairs will fall out. Timmy and Bump were friends until death parted them and they're not the only ham pair I know of who've done that. We need to remember that a lot of the time we'll only hear about pairs when they're having problems, so figures we seem to see might well be skewed by that fact.

Thank you both for exelent information

DrKMcK: I'm glad I could make you laugh and I will follow your advice on just getting one dwarf to start with. I think that is the best first time around as dwarf owner, I really dont want to have two cages in my living room so then thats settled

I was at my local petstore today, they are really good with the animals All the little furries have houses and toys in their enclosures and they even have two girls who handle all the animals before they get sold. All their animals live in carefresh bedding also so im werry pleased with them and buy all my pet products at their shop because i can see that their animals are being well taken care of. All the hamsteres where separated also so they had one per enclosure I got a little sneak peak at their dwarfs when i was there, they where sooo cute!!! so i bet soon I will get myself an little furry But next time i will go right before closing time caus i guess thats a better time for the hamsters to be looked at since its on the evening (they close at 8pm)

Just so you know, I would NEVER buy from a petstore that did not treat the animals good, we have a few of those in town too and i dont shop at those caus i really dont want to support stores that dont treat the animals right. Just wanted you to know that caus i know many dont support people buying hammies from stores

What I usually look for first is that they are clean, clean, clean. Especially their rumps. Any messiness, wetness or dirtiness could mean wet tail and that's a heartache, even though it can be handled these days. Best to avoid that. Also, look for shiney, alert little eyes. Don't be put off if the hammies scatter, they'll be a bit anxious if they aren't handled frequently. If they are being handled well, they should be curious enough to walk up and sniff your hand.
Most of all, take your time and don't let anyone pressure you into taking any hammy because they want a sale. Others on the site will have more info for you I'm sure. Good luck.

yeah ive read abit about wet-tail and it sounds awfull! poor little hammies with their rumps all wet and stomach all in tumbles, poor little things

I will keep an eye out for bright eyes, shiny fur, NO MESSINESS!, and that they are allert and active. will also take my time, i always need a bit of time when choosing an animal, want to make sure that the one i choose will be a good little pet and not nippy or angry :P hehe!

The lady behind the counter said to me that all of their little furries are being handled as much as they can before selling them, they apparantley have two girls working there in charge of the taming But i guess i cant rely on that being the truth so i will put my hand down in their cage to see if one comes to me Maybe the hamster wil pick me and not the other way around ^_^

Thank you again for a brilliant and helpfull answer

I would suggest getting a 10'' gallon tank, and a mesh lid. My two dwarves love there tank, and it's convinent so they won't kick out their bedding or escape through any bars of a cage.

10 gallons is too small.

UK seem to go for 70x40cm as an absolute minimum for a single dwarf. my three (robo, hybrid and winter white) are in 100x50cm cages and they use all of the space

Yeah... I think 20 gallons is the minimum people use for dwarf hamsters.
70cm by 40cm is a good size to aim for, but like jesselle our dwarf hams all have 100cm by 50cm cages (or slightly bigger) and use the entire lot so you probably can't go too big. Bars can be ok too as long as you're careful with the size, only one of ours doesn't have bars/mesh and thats only because he became a bar chewer.
