Winter white expert needed please
Hi,
I hoping someone on here is a bit of an expert on winter whites?
I have some photos and would like a second opinion on whether the hamsters in the photos are genuine Winter Whites before I offer a home.
I'm asking, as I wish to show them and eventually breed.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks

Re: Winter white expert needed please
If in doubt, assume they're not - especially if you're going to breed them.

If they do not come with a pedigree showing well known and trusted breeders in the lines then I would assume they are not pure.

Thank you for the replies
They are a private breeder. And the person appears friendly......I am a cautious person though and as I want to show and eventually breed I want to be sure. I'm not an expert and I don't know how to identify a hybrid?

Re: Winter white expert needed please
Sometimes its impossible to identify a hybrid. Its part of why we must rely on the pedigree and family history so much.

Re: Winter white expert needed please
Are there pedigrees? If the parents are imported, do they have contact information for the original breeders?

Re: Winter white expert needed please
I would agree with the other opinions, especially Souffle. I would want to know where the person got their founding stock and outcrosses, and would expect a written pedigree. If the pedigree has gaps, pet shop hamsters, or doesn't have known reputable breeders in it then I wouldn't use them for breeding.
It can be easy to tell a hybrid from looking (e.g. winter white shape with argente colouring or red eyes), but not as easy to tell if they are definitely pure. I fostered a hamster that to all intents and purposes looked like an argente Campbell's (and a judge at a show said they wouldn't disqualify her as she didn't look obviously hybridy)... until she turned white in winter.
