Default Gus the School Hamster Update

During the school hols we were looking after Gus the school's WW. I thought you'd like to see how he's getting on! He's a normal marbled WW and is tame and friendly now. Despite being a few days older than our two boys he still remains a lot smaller, though he is growing. He is very active and enjoys coming to stay in his 'holiday home'! Everybody likes him and I am always finding technicians offering him cucumber and cheese!

Anyway here he is!

Sadly he has gone back to school now, but he will hopefully be coming for a weekend soon!

He's lovely - and I'm really interested in his colour because he looks a lot like Sparrow. Now Sparrow is meant to be a Pearl ww and he was judged as such in two shows - then, in his last show, he was reclassified as non-standard

he does have quite a bit od grey weaving through his white coat - could he be marbled too? I understand that is non-standard?

Gus is definitly Marbled although at the last show the judge was in two minds as to whether he was a normal in winter coat. He has always been that colour with varying darkness. He differs from the pearls in that where the pearls are meant to have the even ticking all over, Gus has the definite normal pattern with the arches and stripe but the normal pattern has white patches marbled through it. I must say I think he is a very pretty colour

I've never really investigated the standards for dwarfs with not having any showable ones! So I learned something today from reading this!
Gus is a cracker though - and though he may be smaller, he is a lot bigger than when I was first introduced to him at Rotherham - but still just as beautiful!
Is Mottled a recognised WW gene then? or is there a possibility of hybrid in his past? I'm just wondering as I didn't know it was, and I know that Gus is a breeder ham? Or is it a recent mutation? I was only aware of the normal, sapphire and pearl in ww.

Questions questions! I know

Marbled seems to be quite a recent mutation and there is no standard for it as yet so all marbled are classified as non standards. I don't think they are hybrids or else he would be disqualified so I think this is a recognised mutation. I would say he is actually in between a Normal and a pearl so perhaps there is some suppression of the pearl making him half in half
I think there are mottled in Campbells spuds mum which are also non standard I believe.

Thanks Souff, as I say, Ive not really looked into WW genetics at all, but Id only heard of mottled for Campbells - always good to learn something new.

So I guess that if it is a new mutation then it will be a long road before it becomes standard (if ever?)
See you tomorrow Mrs P.R.O (first I wrote that without the punctuation and it looked like I was being very offensive) lol
