Default What i need to know about Winter White hamsters?

I currently have a female Syrian hamster named Jojo, that I adopted from a local rescue in October. She was the mommy of a litter of eight, and she is the sweetest thing ever. Recently, I have been looking into buying a set of dwarf hamsters, and I heard from several sources that Russian Dwarfs are more friendly towards humans and social with other hamsters. Is this true? Is there another dwarf breed that is more sociable? Here are some of my other questions:

-I live in america, so I have limited good quality cages. Jojo lives in a 20 gallon long aquarium, and is very happy. Would a 10 gallon aquarium be enough for a dwarf, would it be large enough for 2? What other cages could I get? ( budget of a 13 year old girl)

- Male or female? If I want friendlier hamsters, does gender contribute? Is there a better chance they will get along if I get 2? I already have a female hamster so I was thinking about getting 2 males. What do you think?

- What are some notable differences between syrians and dwarfs?

- Which is the best breed in your opinion? why?

- How large should their wheel be? ( other supplies as well)

- Do I need to get 2 of everything? or can some supplies be shared between 2 dwarfs?

- Any other information on dwarfs is very much appreciates

Thanks guys!

I read that winter whites are among the friendliest of dwarf hamsters (at least it's on Wikipedia). It will always depend on individual hamster how friendly and sociable he/she is. You can get a tame roborovski or a wild campbell.

I'm in the U.S. too, and it's possible to get decent cages after some research. 10 gallon tank would be on the small side for dwarves, as they still are pretty active and could use the room to run around (+ room for toys, sand bath, wheels, etc.) I find that the minimum size cage for that is Ware Natural Wood Cage for Hamsters. That's a great budget cage for 1-2 dwarves (but if you get roborovski hamsters, be sure they can't reach the bars with lower bedding until they get big enough so they can't easily escape through the bars). Once you put all the toys in, you can find that there's little room for the hamsters to run around, which is also why bigger cages are nice.

You should have 2 wheels, and you can have 1 of each for the rest : big flatter food dish so both hams can fit at the same time, one big house should be fine if your hams get along well enough, various toys to share. Avoid tubes and separated levels and pods for more than one hamster. 6.5" wheels are good for most dwarf hamsters. Small roborovskis could use 4.5" to 6.5".

I hear male or female doesn't matter too much.

For houses, pick something at least ~5" diameter for 2 hamsters. The wooden house that comes with the cage I linked is a good size, for example.

Thanks so much I'm really looking for cage alternatives. For my Syrian the 20 gallon long aquarium seems to fit her well ( She was in a 10 gallon with 2 of her daughters when I adopted her) I don't really want to spend the money, or the room on another 20 gallon aquarium, but I want the hamsters to be happy. Thanks for the link, it's looks nice. I
ll check it out. I'm really interested in wire cages if you have any more cages, I would love to see them

I've only ever had boys and they are lovely. Although saying that every ham does vary!
I like to give them decent space (70cm x 40cm I find is ideal for 1 or 2) but a 20 gallon tank would be brill also

I find that dwarfs are much less demanding than syrians and will often entertain themselves. In my opinion I love all the dwarf species, but in terms of one that will play and interact with you I'd have to say winterwhite/russian hybrid is the best

sand bath is an essential for dwarfies and its great fun to watch them roll!
