Mushroom and Mandarin Winter Whites
I popped into the Cheltenham SHC show on my way home yesterday, and was chatting to a breeder who had bought along some new colours of winter whites she had. The Mushrooms (coloured like mushrooms!) had appeared in some Sapphires she had, it seems to perhaps be a diluting gene but not quite sure how it works yet. The gene also gives a Brown colour when put with the normal WW - not like Pearl.
The other colour she had was Mandarin, which she obtained from a Dutch breeder (it sounded like they might have been bought over illegaly without quarantining or licences, but I didn't delve too deeply there). The Mandarins are a gorgeous yellow colour. Having done some Googling when I got home Mandarins seem to be quite widespread in Singapore, if you go to this Singapore hobby breeder's site http://h4hamster.sgpets.org/hamster_faq_species.htm and look at "colours and patterns available" under WWs, they have Mandarins there, also known as Puddings. The Mandarins I met really were gorgeous, I wish I'd had a camera.
All very interesting! I wish I was able to breed hamsters already - bring on graduation!
Edit to add: here's some more pictures from another Singapore breeder of Mandarins and Mandarin Pearls http://www.geocities.com/zerlings/new.html

Oh wow... those Manderins are pretty! they do look orange, they kind of remind me of sherbet
Awww I want one :P I didn't realize WW came in so many colors, I thought they were like the Roborovski and only came in their natural colors pretty much, I thought it was just the Campbell's Russian Dwarf that came in all the colors!
The only other change in color I have seen in the Roborovski is a White-Faced version.

Up till now the only colour mutation I've heard of in Winter White Russian Dwarf hamsters is the Sapphire (also a gorgeous colour), the Pearl being a pattern rather than a colour. I've also heard of "Imperial" WWs but not sure what this means, only seen it vaguely referred to on the internet.
After a bit more Googling on the Mandarin colour, it seems it might have been a mutation that appeared in Campbell/WW hybrids, possibly in Holland which have since been bred to WWs so that now they are almost all WW. There seems to be a bit of controversy about it.
All very interesting stuff anyway.

Hi there!!
I actually spoke to the breeder of those mandarins. and from what he said I personally believe that they are NOT hydrids. They are also different to those going around Singapore (or they were different last time I looked into it all!) Of course there will always be people that wont accept the new colours, for whatever reason.
As for quarentine, as far as I know, as long as you have all the correct papers, you don't have to do it anymore. I may be wrong on that, but I know a few people who import and don't quarentine.

Hi littlemissdwarfhamster, I recognise you from furry forum global! Welcome to HC
What did the dutch breeder say then? If it's a separate mutation it seems confusing to give it the same name as one that is already contraversial.
I raised this question on a hamster discussion group populated mostly by US breeders and those working on genetics, and found out more about the hybrid mandarins that appeared a few years ago, unfortunately noone knew anything concrete and noone could find the photos showing hybrid-looking mandarin hamsters. Someone did say though that a group in Singapore, I think, had "proved" the mandarin was a pure WW mutation, I'm not sure how that was done though.

Hi Emma!
Basically we had a little chat about WW's and Campbells in general. These guys were so much further ahead in breeding terms than the UK. It's hard to explain what I mean by that, but their set-ups, experience, enthusiasm and commitment, seemed to far outweigh what I have seen here.
Anyway, it was stated that they breed WW's Campbells and Hyrids. But all three are kept separate. I know keeping a hybrid 'separate' seems a bit of a mad statement, but I hope you understand what I mean. The lines of WWs and Campbells they had - which were long lines with 10/12 years of generations, had no hydrids in them. I was also shown how to spot hybrids, as when they are continually bred certain physical features change.
It was a very interesting talk, and from what I heard, I saw no reason why these hamsters would be hybrids. And I saw no reason why these guys would lie about it too. They also mentioned they had loads of other mutations for the WWs too. I would love to go over and have a look in some European pet shops. Imagine WW's with red or yellow eyes.......
As for the name, I can't say, but perhaps it wasn't these guys who were copying the name?
So, there. Thats pretty much all I know. It's not conclusive, but it's a good start.

There was an interesting debate on NHC Online recently re the purity of these new colours/patterns. Many still belive they are hybrids and others are sitting on the fence. You need to be a member of the group to see the messages, but I have a link to another discussion on Hamster House if anyone wants to check it out.
