Default My hamster give birth suddenly.

Hi, its been so long already since i join this forum and I kind of forget about this forum LoL.

I quit keeping hamster when i move to another town 2years ago. And now, when i finally settle down to my new town. I start keeping a hamster again. Now, its a robo.

I adopted 1pair, knowing that robo cant produce baby as quick as other hamster.

They arrive 4 days ago. For this 4 days, i only feed them 2times and change their water bottle.. i want to completely adapt to this new environment first..

But this morning, i find 5 cubs in their cage..
I adopted a pregnant mama. 😭😭

Honestly, i am not ready for this.

Could someone give me an advice what should i do to them??
How to take a good care for them?

I even havent introduce them here. I plan to introduce them officialy when they have fully adapt.

Well, congrats I guess! So sorry this happened to you, not cool. Whereabouts are you? You could start looking for homes right away for them... i believe on youtube, Victoria Raechel has a good video about accidental litters that you should check out. I think you can provide extra nesting material, I remember she took out her hammie’s wheel when the babies were born, and she recommended not touching them or getting closer to them in the first 2 weeks not to interfere in the mother/pup bond. Hope this helps, good luck! (I’d love to adopt one but I am in Oxfordshire. Too far?)

Also, remember that it takes only weeks for pups to become sexually mature, so make sure to separate the lads from the lassies, otherwise you could well end up with more pups!

Hello and welcome. As for introducing the pair - don't! You may have a male and a female. In any case it is better to only keep sibling pairs, and not introduce dwarf hamsters to live together.

It's important not to disturb the cage now until the pups are coming out of the nest on their own with their eyes open (if they aren't yet). Or the Mother could cull them. Just put plenty of food and bedding out.

I think it's about four weeks you need to separate male from female robos but it is not easy sexing them. Easiest way is in a glass jar, one at a time. Scoop one up and hold the jar up and look underneath. Even then it is not always clear if they are male or female (but check photos of male and female robo underparts). When it comes to separating them at four weeks, definite females can stay in with the Mother. Definite males can stay together in a separate cage. Any "not certain" sex will need to be kept separate.

Robos breed like wildfire and a boy could mate with the Mother or a sibling.

This site has a lot of info about robos (breeding, sexing etc).

Just stupid me... I have do what you say on saturday night.. putting them in my betta soliterr, looking underneath.. and i got no problem sexing them as i saw big testicle on my male and 4nipples on my female and i dont realized it because she is pregnant. If yesz maybe i will send her back to the previous owner who has more experience than me. 😭

I try not to touch them and bother them..
Just once when i move the litter and the MOM to smaller cage so they cant get separated too far from each other..

The litter though, goes from 5 to only 2 now. 😭
This is what i dont want to happen

Sorry to hear that. Do the pups have their eyes open yet? If not then leave well alone and just put food out.

This can happen often so don't freak out lol. Make sure to separate the 2 robos but leave the mother with her pups. I recommend Victoria Raechels video about accidental litters for help. I hope now you see that keeping more than 1 hamster in a cage is a bad idea. DO NOT touch the babies because the mother will eat them if disturbed. Best of luck!😋

I think one hamster was already pregnant on arrival and the other was going to be introduced but hasn’t been - is that right? It was just bad luck and it is very common for people to find a female Robo is pregnant - it happens a lot from pet shops as they don’t get the sexing right sometimes. The Oak tree farm link has clear pictures fir that x. It is the babies that are difficult to sex sometimes but you don’t do that until they are four weeks old. Until then, as mentioned above, they shouldn’t be handled or it could make the Mother cull them. This is an instinct if they fear the babies will be harmed so rather than have then eaten by a predator, they cull them themselves. But that can also happen even if you haven’t disturbed anything if the Mother is too young to know what to do.

It sounds like you now have two babies, which is manageable and when it is time to sex/separate the babies it will be easier as if there is any doubt you can just put them each in a cage on their own. I would say though that you still need pregnancy watch for the Mother as they can get pregnant again the day of giving birth - if the male was still in there. That is how robos breed like wildfire!

You’ll need four bin cages at the moment - the current cage plus 3 others. One for the adult male (who I guess already has a cage) and two more in case each baby needs their own cage. The reason the babies need separating by four weeks (I think - it’s on the Oak farm link) is so a male baby can’t make the Mother pregnant again. If both babies are definitely female at 4 weeks they can be left in with the Mother but if there is any doubt over sex then put that baby in a separate cage.
