Re: Food for Robos
Thanks so much everyone, I just wanted to know what most people thought was acceptable and you so going forward I know what to recommend. I will definitely be making sure they have at least a bag of this type of food in if anyone adopts a robo from me. I'm still learning myself when it comes to Robos and other dwarfs.
Syrians I think I know what I am doing for the most part

Re: Food for Robos
I use Harry hamster for my robo currently. I was worried about the size of the pieces but he manages just fine with the larger bits. after thinking though, in the wild, if they find a large piece of food, they chomp it into smaller bits and pouch it which is probably why Niko doesn't struggle with it.
Also Niko eats like a horse. Robos have a faster motabolism so it's not uncommon for them to eat the same quantity as their larger Syrian cousin within a certain amount of time. Both ghost and Niko get ~15g of food every 3 days. This is with added veggies, mealworms as well as a few extra seeds and sprays as HH its pellet heavy
Rodipet is expensive but I guess you get what you pay for. Same with getzoo. I've heard of mixerama (or something like that) but idk how good it is.
Alternatively you could do 50/50 mix of commercial mix and your own seed mix? I've thought about it but need to do more research. Im hoping to base it on foods found in their native environments like rodipet do.

Re: Food for Robos
I would be very cautious about making your own food. It's not an easy process and requires very careful planning and calculations to get nutrients where they should be. Even when you have the macronutrients, such as protein, down you still have things like vitamin and mineral content to account for!
If someone really wants to make things for their hamsters, the safest option is sticking with treats. This won't lead to an imbalanced diet and can be very beneficial still depending on ingredients used.
Luckily Rodipet already has this figured out and takes that difficult process out of the equation. I would also caution people against thinking a DIY diet would be any less expensive than Rodipet - on the contrary it would cost significantly more money as you'd have to be purchasing a wide variety of ingredients, and especially for those with few hamsters this just isn't a viable cost effective solution.
According to their website Rodipet charge per order for shipping and it really doesn't seem that terrible for the UK in particular considering how infrequently you'd be ordering in the first place. I'll leave any further details to others though.

Re: Food for Robos
Engel I don’t really think you can compare anything that a robo would find in the wild with Harry hamster, they may be able to eat it but it’s far from optimal, 15g every three days isn’t a lot tbh!
I don’t think it’s fair to say Rodipet charge stupidly high shipping fees really, considering the orders are coming from Germany I think it’s quite reasonable, certainly a lot cheaper than Getzoo or Mixera although if you can afford it (& ( know not everyone can) well worth it especially if you buy a few bags of food to freeze.
Mixing your own food does take a lot of research, worth it if you want to spend the time on it which again isn’t for everyone & not something to be done without a lot of thought but it can be done, I’ve been feeding my own mix for a few years now & all my hams have done really well on it but it was a lot of time & work in the making.

Just realised that what I put made no sense anyway. so ill edit it.
apologies it would appear ive confused with something else that ive found which I thought was rodipet.
I need to do research on it if anything it'll be a 50/50 type mix as I doubt id be comfortable making my own mix from scratch

Re: Food for Robos
I just had this thought yesterday that I thought it was frowned upon to give dwarfs/robos sweet food including things like sweetcorn/peas/beetroot/parsnip. I'm presuming because of their high sugar content.
But, both rodipet and bunny dreams have some of these in, getzoo is the only one that doesn't as far as I can tell.
I would be interested to know your thoughts on this?
Rodipet Ingredients:
Yellow millet, corn flakes, barley, oat flakes, buckwheat, rye, clover seeds, naked oats, hempseed, rapeseed, camelina seeds, quinoa, alfalfa seeds, amaranth, carrots, toasted soybeans, red clover seeds, parsnips, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, parboiled peas, evening primrose seeds, poppy seeds, beetroot, golden linseed, nettle seeds, milk thistle seeds, aniseed, parsley leaves, black sesame seeds, birch leaves, brown linseed, spinach leaves, hazel leaves
Bunny dreams Ingredients:
Yellow millet, canary seed, pea flakes, quinoa seeds (6%), barley, mung beans (5%), puffed amaranth (5%), barley flakes, oats, silver millet, perilla seeds (3%), red millet, carrots, linseeds (2%), grass seeds, parsnips, dandelion leaves, lucerne, mealworms (1%), yarrow, ribwort, sesame (1%), calcium carbonate, beetroot, calendula blossoms, chamomile blossoms, rose blossoms, wheat bran (millet 24%).
Getzoo ingredients:
Millet (yellow millet, silver millet, Japanese millet, Manna millet, red millet, Senegal millet), grass seeds (rye grass, cane swing, tall fescue, red fescue, white bent grass, timothy grass, bluegrass, meadow fescue), sunflower seeds, buckwheat, linseed, brown perilla, milk thistle, safflower, canary seed, amaranth, dari, milo, sesame, pine nut, mealworm, maggots, chicory, raspberry seed, stinging nettle seed, rose hip pips, marigold, pink cornflowers, blue cornflowers, red cornflowers, peppermint, lemon balm, chamomile.

Re: Food for Robos
I'd have to say that's a bit of a misconception and twisting of information - mostly due to people not necessarily understanding the nutrition of such foods in general but that's perfectly understandable!
Corn isn't all that high in sugar. Yes, it has more than some other vegetables, but in the amount a hamster would receive as part of a balanced healthy diet you would not see any problems. Peas are similarly not that high in sugar in proper hamster proportions, same with beetroot and parsnip. Do keep in mind that robos aren't actually one of the diabetes prone species.
There's really no good reason to exclude these things from a diet for a diabetes prone species from a nutrition perspective. In fact, there have been quite a few cases where new hamster owners in particular were mislead into removing specific ingredients from mixes which just causes the entire diet to become imbalanced.
Speaking of foods people commonly assume are not an option for diabetes prone species, carrot is also occasionally assumed to be too sweet which is just not true at all.
As far as foods go, I'll always view Rodipet as the best until something better comes along which is very unlikely. Unfortunately this isn't an option for everyone, but where it is an option it is definitely an extremely high quality food and would be an excellent choice.

Re: Food for Robos
That's the Rodipet dwarf mix which isn't formulated for diabetes-prone species. The hybrid mix is, and doesn't contain the corn flakes, peas etc. Robos aren't diabetes prone though.
I feed my Russian the hybrid mix but she also gets things like peas and carrot in small amounts as treats.

Re: Food for Robos
The dwarf mix not formulated for hybrids is still completely fine for hybrids. While the hybrid mix would be preferable, either are a completely fine choice for hybrids especially if you can only get one food or only have the regular dwarf mix on hand.

Re: Food for Robos
Vegetables that are relatively high in sugar are also high in fibre so the sugars are absorbed slowly making them fine, in moderation, for even diabetes prone hams, they also have good amounts of vitamins & minerals, while I wouldn’t give my hams large amounts it’s fine in all those mixes.
As Robos aren’t one of the species prone to diabetes you don’t need to worry about that anyway.
