Default Male Vs. Female Dwarf Robo

Hello!

I'm thinking about getting a Dwarf Roborovski hamster as my first hamster, and I wanted to ask about the behavioral differences between a female and a male one? I'm thinking about getting a female because I've heard that they are calmer, but I'm not sure if that's true. I really appreciate the help!

I'm not sure whether males or females are calmer, but Robos in general are not calm at all. They are really fun to watch but very hard to tame. I had a Robo as my first hamster. She was a female and much calmer and slower than most Robos but still too timid to be handled. I was able to feed her from my hand. It seems most pet shop Robos aren't handleable. That's not a problem if that's what you want from a hamster, but it can be disappointing to have a hamster you can't handle if it's what you expected. They love burrowing and like lots of tunnels and things to hide in so you can create a really nice enclosure for a Robo and just watch them hamstering.

I haven’t had personal experience with Robos but from what I know I would totally agree with what sushi says, they probably aren’t the best ham to start off with unless you can get one from a breeder that’s used to being handled unless you’re happy with what is likely to be more of a pet to watch than interact with.
I keep both Russian hybrids & Chinese & with both species find the females are far more active & busy little things than the males who tend to be a bit more lazy! So if you want calmer then I would go for a male, they are all individual so you can never be sure though!

Thank you so much! I'm really new to this so attempting to handle a jumpy hamster would probably stress me out as well.

Thank you! I'll keep that in mind. I've never handled any sort of small animal so I think I'll try to aim for a Syrian instead, since I've read that they are calmer.

I have a Russian dwarf now and I think they're a nice middle ground between Syrians and Robos. They're smaller than Syrians (so can have more smaller items in the same size cage) and generally less demanding, but a bit slower and less timid than Robos.

Hi Pokki and welcome.

I think a syrian is a good place to start, especially if you are wanting a hamster that you will have a higher chance of being able to interact with.

It is generally thought that females are more 'energetic' than males, but let me tell you my male syrian Twinkle is just as crazy and faster than the female syrians I have has as well. I will say this though, they all have unique personalities and it is such fun getting to know them.

If you do go for a syrian make sure you get a cage as big as you possibly can get and a big enough wheel. Not sure how much research you have done yet, but most pet shop cages will not be big enough or have the correct sized wheels.

If you need any more help once you have definitely decided what species you are going to get, I am sure there are many of us on here that will be happy to help.

I agree. If it’s your first hamster I would get a Syrian - a nice handful to handle and perhaps easier to learn the ropes on. They are great characters as well. Their personalities vary whether male or female. I’ve only had male Syrians. One was lazy but would sit for a cuddle. Another was maverick and full of energy always wanting to be out. Female Syrians generally are considered extremely active and can be quite large and need a big cage. They also come on heat every four days which may affect their behaviour. They have a bit of a musky smell when in heat but apparently some it is not noticeable and some it is very noticeable.

I think its more a matter of personality of the individual hamster rather than species or gender.

My advice to you would be to contact a rescue where sometimes the personality of a hamster is already known so they could tell you a bit about him or her. You may also be able to handle a hamster or one may "speak" to you meaning that you're drawn to him/her and vice versa. I know this sounds fictional but it really does happen.

Aw, that sounds so sweet! I'll try to see if I can do that if I get the chance.

I find that a lot will depend on inherited temperament and personality rather than a hard and fast rule about gender determining behaviour. For example one of my female Chinese is probably the most laid back and calm little lady you'll ever meet but she comes from a line of rather laid back hamsters and I've also had male Chinese who have been quite lively but generally speaking, males tend to be more laid back and this certainly seems to be the case with Syrians. I know that a lot of people find that Syrians are easier to handle due to their size but my female Syrian is extremely difficult to handle at times and I feel that it's worth mentioning that a larger hamster is going to be that much more powerful and give a harder bite than a smaller dwarf. A good breeder or rescue should be able to tell you a little bit about the hamster's usual behaviour so it's always woirth asking them.

Out of the species, I have found that there has been the least difference in genders with the Roborovski but even a calm Roborovski from a good breeder is still rather lively in comparison to the other species.

I always recommend that people keep an open mind because I think that sometimes, it's like Roa says and a particular hamster will catch your eye and you'll know that they are the hamster for you.
