Injured foot on dwarf hamster. Please help!
My girlfriend and I had two male robo dwarf hamsters in one cage. We woke up this morning to see that their “play fighting” had turned really bad overnight. One of them has a swollen, red/purple looking foot that he can’t stand on. We moved him into a separate makeshift cage and all he has done is sleep. He hasn’t ate yet but is drinking a lot of water.
The person we rescued them from said that they were fine as long as they were the same sex and had separate food and water. Now I understand that this is false. I’m super worried about this little guy. It looks like the dominant one has been eating all of their food because the injured one is a lot smaller. I’m kicking myself and extremely upset because neither my girlfriend or I didn’t notice sooner, but we both have been working long hours the past week. I had never heard the injured one squeak or anything until this morning and when I saw his foot I started crying and have been crying since. There’s no bone poking out that I can see.
Any advice is appreciated. I want him to be okay no matter what it takes, costs, etc. I feel horrible.

He needs to see a vet urgently for examination.
Make that your priority. I hope he can be helped.

Yep take him to a vet straight away. If his foot is swollen and red/purple its obviously injured and the vet can tell you what needs/can be done. Whatever happens I would not put them together again.

Re: Injured foot on dwarf hamster. Please help!
Hello. I am so sorry to hear this. It happens a lot and people aren’t informed properly about keeping pairs. A change of ownership and environment could make them fall out but so many other things can trigger it as well. Well done for separating then. I agree with the others it needs urgent vet treatment. But you really need an exotic vet as they know a lot more about hamsters. If you google exotic vet in your area there is bound to be one not too far away. They are no more expensive but your hamster will get a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Hopefully it will be a case of antibiotics and pain relief - it might need amputation so be prepared for that but they can do perfectly well without a foot. We have had 3 legged hamsters on here . He will soon be thriving with love, attention and a bit of feeding up. If you’re looking for a new permanent cage the duna multy or hamster heaven are good options (providing all the plastic tubes and penthouse are taken out.

I can only echo the other comments here about taking him to a specialist vet as soon as possible. Please let us know how you both get on x

Hey! Yes I can provide an update. I finally found a vet about an hour and a half from me and took him to be seen. They were EXTREMELY rude and I even had the vet assistant (tech?) said “you shouldn’t be so hard on yourself and make yourself this upset. He’s just a little hamster”. Let me tell you, my rage went through the roof with that comment. The vet came and examined him as best he could, my poor little guy was so skiddish. He said that there was “nothing they could do at this time”. No X-ray, no antibiotics, no pain relief!!! I’m furious. He said that if his condition declines to call back. Fast forward to a day later and I’m checking in on him, making sure he has his fresh water and food. He comes out of his hideout to greet me and HAS 3 LEGS NOW. Chewed it right off apparently. I called the vet yet again and was told that hamsters sometimes do that when they are injured, and if I want I can bring him in to have him euthanized ?!?!? There were some harsh words exchanged on the phone that day. He didn’t even give me an idea for what to do about my hammie’s self amputation. I asked if I could use antibiotic ointment (the kind without pain relief in it) and the vet said he couldn’t answer that over the phone. So now my little guy is adjusting to his new 3 legged life... he’s getting around very well surprisingly but I’m TERRIFIED of an infection occurring!!! No idea what to do to help my little fella, I am so worried constantly and the vet is no help. He is the only vet near us that sees exotic animals, I can’t go any farther because the car is in the shop and the next nearest exotic vet it over 2 and a half hours away.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me for my little guys amputated leg?! Besides makuna honey.. I’ve seen that suggestion on so many forums and I refuse to try and use a homeopathic remedy that has no proven evidence to back it up. Any suggestions are so appreciated for my poor hamster. I do plan on filing complaints about the vet and his assistant however my hamsters health is more important at this time.

OMG that is so terrible, I am sorry you went through this, There is no need to euthanize your hamster what so ever, many hamsters can do very well on 3 legs.
I think the hamster would just lick manuka honey off to be honest.
Pain killer might help him, normally metacam. I don't know about an infection occurring, What does the area look like now, any redness or swelling?

Here are some pics (hopefully I’m doing this correctly and they post the right way) of his injury the first day he had it. The ones with the red circle are from today. And then I’ve included pics from just now with her missing leg. Please note that he is on a wheel in the pics only because it was the easiest way to take a picture without him scurrying over to one of his hideouts, I’ve let him use it for a few minutes here and there in the past two days, once he had chewed his leg off and I observed him. He runs on it like it’s normal... almost as if he doesn’t realize he’s missing an entire appendage. Unfortunately these are the best pics I can take. The pics of his injury are taken from when I had to put him in a box for a few hours before my vet opened, where I stayed up all night to ensure he was still alive and well. He is now in his own cage. I have to find somewhere near me who carries another Aquarium because the cage I have him I’m right now is a plastic bottom with wire bars on top. He hasn’t tried to escape but I’m sure his tiny body could if he attempted. Everywhere I go online I see bad reviews of the glass tanks coming damaged from shipping so I’m weary about it. Anyways, now I am attaching pics .
