Default 3 new Robos

Since previously posting, my Syrian Emily died (old age) we miss her.

I have now got another Syrian 'Sandy', had her for about 6 months, she's a lovely hamster with a really nice nature (bought her for my wife as a 3rd wedding anniversary present).

Also today I bought 3 Male Dwarf Roborovskis (Del, Rodney & Uncle Albert) from Pets at Home, they are really fast compared to Sandy. I have the 3 Male Dwarf Roborovskis in quite a small cage as there wasn't any I really liked in store, so just bought a temporary until I find a more suitable one. I want to upgrade, do any forum members have any suggestions as to the best cage for my 3 Roborovskis. Ideally I would like quite a large cage (I've included pictures of my current setup). Any advice from more experienced members would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely remove that rope. It won't be safe to chew as cotton is never safe when chewed, since it can cause serious and even fatal digestive blockages and such. It also presents a serious fall risk.

You also should separate them as soon as possible. Hamsters of any species really shouldn't be housed together as it causes unnecessary stress and can also lead to serious injury as well as death from fighting. Having their own properly set up cage, they will be significantly happier and you will not have any of the unneeded worries and risks!

That substrate also isn't suitable. Pelleted substrates don't allow for burrowing, so while some can be safe and appropriate for litter boxes they really aren't appropriate as an actual substrate for the entire cage.

It can be quite challenging to successfully house a group or a pair of hamsters unfortunately and whilst the cage needs to be large enough to give each hamster some space, several experienced keepers of dwarf hamsters have found that too large of a cage can actually increase the risk of falling out.

You'll need to avoid cages with levels and any hides should have more than one entrance to prevent one hamster being bullied into a corner with no way out. It's also beneficial to avoid using food bowls with pairs and groups and they tend to do better with scatter feeding.

Robos can often be sneaky about showing that there is conflict so if you do keep them together you will have to monitor them quite carefully. You'll need to be looking for things like weight differences which would suggest that one is taking more than their fair share of food, chasing each other and any signs of injuries (no matter how small). Despite all this you still can't always avoid serious injury so you will need to make sure that you have spare cages ready in case you need to split them up.

Totally agree with fluffagrams. Most dwarf pairs will get on but I've never heard of a pair living together for a long time. It's knowing when to intervene, some people mistake it for playing when in actual fact the smaller one is being bullied. Dwarf hamsters easily adapt to being in separate cages and will become more confident.

I got a trio of roborovski hamsters from gumtree and quickly realised that one was a lot smaller. Once separated she seemed a lot happier.

I eventually split the other two up due to fighting.

I hope you enjoy your little speeders and that you have a couple of cages ready just in case. Best of luck. I love robos!

I would also recommend splitting up the hamsters. I find it too risky to keep them in one enclosure. As for bigger cages, there are many that are suitable. For a barred cage I would recommend the Barney Hamster cage. You could also make your own DIY cage - I made my own 1500sq inch cage. There are also tanks that you could buy!

I don’t have any great advice as I have only had my Robo for a week, so there are people on here much more educated than me. I just want to say how much I love their names, especially Uncle Albert
