The pet shop might not have told you, but gerbils need companionship. If you've just got Jumpy, it's not too late to go back and get one of his littermates. I wouldn't recommend keeping him on his own - it really isn't good for gerbils.

EDIT: Also please don't worry about the gerbil or any future hamsters getting fat. Rodents don't overeat. You can give the gerbil as much muesli mix as he wants.
