Exclamation My robo has a lump :(

Hello,

Yesterday I noticed that my robo has a lump on his right hand side on the size of his belly near the top of his leg, it’s the same colour as his skin and is kind of soft but doesn’t feel pussy or anything and it has fur growing over it, he doesn’t flinch or anything when I touch it and he’s still his normal self eating and drinking and running around still being really active and he doesn’t seem in pain with it.

Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be as I’m really worried, I will take him to the vet but just wanting to see what people’s opinions were, he’s around 18 months old.

Thank you!

Our robo developed lumps. I assumed it was a tumour of some kind. He lived quite happily with them for a long time. It is worth a vet visit in case it is an abscess or infection - to rule that out. Our robo was also 18 months old when he developed his lumps. I would have had it removed under surgery, but he had quite a few and it was too big an area of his body. If he just has the one lump, and you have a good vet (exotic vets know more about hamster conditions and surgery) it would be worth seeing if the vet thinks it is operable. If removed he may be fine. They can also find out if it's cancerous or benign that way.

Hi emmypaige- I haven`t posted on here for a while but while visiting and spotted your post, I wanted to say I agree with Serendipity regards having this lump checked by a vet, preferably one who won`t have a feel and send you away with a guess or antibiotics if they `think` it`s an abscess, which would usually need aspired or drained to determine if it was an abscess or a small growth. Robos are very skittish little things and I know it`s stressful enough just to get them to a vet! But my last Robo was well into his second year of life when he formed a lump on his shoulder and it grew bigger and he lost a lot of weight.

These things can be removed by surgery but the anaesthesia can be the biggest danger. At 18 months he`s not young, but Robos can live a long time beyond this if they remain healthy and lump free. I truly sympathise because I`ve lost many small rodents to lumps of one kind or another and it`s soul destroying.

Many vets will recommend leaving lumps alone due to age and the lifespan of a hamster, but I would honestly say if the vet you see is more positive that removal would be best and your little man would be home the same day resting and then racing about again within a day or two, I would say that`s a risk worth taking. But the vet is the one who will give you the options. Stay positive and post back.
