Default Help a new Surprise Hamster Mom!

So recently a tenant of ours moved out. And much to our surprise, upon cleaning the apartment we found a very angry, very lonely Russian Dwarf Hamster. Now we are animal fanatics with twenty years between in the veterinary industry but we are hamster virgins! We immediately knew he was a new family member but man, he does not feel the same affection for us! He “growls” or “barks” when we open his cage. He seems healthy and we are happy to simply keep him alive with food and water but my heart breaks that he will never know cuddling or affection. Does anyone have tips on “taming” him? We don’t need a show hamster or a “toy” but I don’t would love to help him relax at least. Thank you!

It is awful that his previous owner abandoned him but he sounds very fortunate to have found you!

First things first... Hamsters don't mind being 'lonely' as they are very solitary animals and WILL fight if put with another hamster so don't feel bad that he is alone. It is far far better that way!

As for his behaviour- you can start by getting him used to your voice and scent by talking to him each time you see him or are in the same room as he is. Get a tissue and keep it tucked up you sleeve or in your bra if you're a lady, basically it needs to be next to your skin for a few hours to pick up your scent, then tear the tissue up and put it in his cage. This allows him to become accustomed to your sound and smell. That's a good starting point.

I adopted an angry dwarf hamster who is on a constant mission to bite my fingers. When i stroke him he gives himself a shake unless he's busy eating or drinking and when i try to pick him up he throws himself about to get rid of me.
He takes mealworms from my fingers now and i've tried taming tactics like putting my hand flat in his cage or play pen with a seed on it. He bites my hand first and then runs off with the seed.
Oh well, he doesn't return my affection either but seems happy enough hamstering about minding his own business.

Give taming a go by letting him get used to your voice and smell first then offer him a treat with your fingers, a seed on the palm of your hand, stroke him gently with one finger and move on to picking him up or get him out in a mug for out of cage time in a secure place like a play pen. Make sure that he has a big enough cage and plenty of substrate, a decent house and wheel, plenty of hides like tunnels etc to keep him happy and they love a whimzee dog chew.

If he turns out to be a hamster like my dwarf who likes his own company best, he'll still be a lovely little animal to have around to watch rather than handle. Hamsters are solitary animals and some need humans only to keep them fed, watered, entertained and comfortable.

I see myself as the guardian to my hamsters rather than seeing them as my pets...

Aww poor little mite! He's very blessed to have you looking after him now; and welcome to the wonderful world of hamster parenting! Ria P's suggestion of just putting your hand into the cage first, then using a mug to get him out is a great one. Sometimes stroking the hamster and offering treats whilst they're inside the mug held over their cage, not even putting them down anywhere, can be a great intermediary step. Also giving him some bedding with your scent on it is really important. Good luck!

Aww you don't know what's happened to him via his previous owners so it may be that he's taken a disliking to people in general or maybe just very fearful. You may be able to tame him but you may not.

Have you got any pics of the angry bean? I think he'll be fine and settle. He may just be confused where his hoomans went
