Default Please help - fur loss looks real sore! Don't know what to do :(

Hi guys,

Had my 2 hamsters since they were 6 weeks old and everything has been great.

They're now 6 months old. I went on holiday for 1 week and everything was fine. What I've come back to is a sore looking hamster. On either side of his tail, he has lost all fur and is red.

The 2 hamsters are brothers and only up until now have had the occasional fight. The brother is marginly bigger and looks to chase my hamster around near the points in which he is now sore.

He is walking, running, jumping and eating/drinking as normal. But I am fearing he may gets worse.

I have been given a steroid cream to use for 1 weeks and see how it goes. Does anyone have any idea what it could be?? The woman I saw was useless, said nothing. Just said take the cream and come back next week... Yeah another £18.60 for her to say nothing again..

Any help much appreciated, thank you

Conor.

Those look to be bite marks from fighting. Any change of routine and their age could have set this out. It's a typical area to attack at the rump and around the genitals.
You need to separate them right away. Personally I would see if it heals. Steroids do tend to stop healing.
I assume they live together? It's not a natural situation for two same sex animals to cohabit and their hormones will be running high just now. Did the vet think it was bite marks.
Even a storage box will do for now as a cage. They will be fine alone and hopefully the injury will heal but keep an eye on it for signs of infection like oosing or swelling. Even if it is not a bite they still need separated in case the well one attacks the sickly one.
