Unhappy Im a first time Robo hamster owner and I am freaking out

I just got my first pet Robo hamster 2 days ago. since I have put him in his cage he hasn't stopped trying to chew, climb up or squeeze through the bars. when I bought the cage the pet store staff member didn't warn me about it being too small or anything. I have got two wooden chews in his cage, which he completely ignores. there is also a wheel that he ignores as well. the cage itself is quite big for a robo hamster and has two different levels including the base and there is a long tube as well which he likes to it in a lot and sleeps there even though there is a house with bedding in it. as this is my first time being a pet owner I would be grateful on any advice or tips of what to do or anything I can buy for him as I am concerned he may escape even though the bar spacing is small.

Hi, unfortunately this happens quite a lot that pet shop staff sell cages that aren't that suitable. I'd try and return this cage and get a bigger one. I don't know how big or small it is but your hamster isn't happy. Until you get a bigger cage sorted you could put in as much substrate, paperbased one like Carefresh or Kaytee clean & cosy, as possible so your hamster can burrow. I'd take the house off the shelf and put it on top of the substrate so he can make a nest. Tear some plain white toilet paper into strips and leave it next to the house. You can put a cardboard toilet roll in for him to hide in and chew on.
Some people make a bin cage out of large storage box which requires some DIY to sort the ventilation or a big enough fish tank with a DIY mesh lid can be used too. That way you don't have to worry about escaping. Have a look at the thread "lets see your cages" on the Forum under Housing.
My Robo lives in a fish tank which isn't the ideal size because a bigger one would be better but here's a photo anyway so you can see how much substrate they need to burrow and make tunnels. He's in his house just now and probably dug himself in. They need places to hide and feel safe in. It looks like your Robo hasn't got that so tries to escape. He should settle once you provide him with what he needs.
You've done the right thing by joining this forum. I've learned a lot since joining this very helpful site.

Hi, as Ria already said unfortunately the pet shops more often than not sell totally inappropriate cages. Sometimes the hamsters can escape through the tubes in these cages, so if possible I would be removing them. I hope you can return the cage and get a refund and upgrade your hamsters cage ASAP. I would be looking at an anything bigger than 70 x 40 cm for a Robo, a bin cage may be a good option. How big is his wheel? I think it needs to be minimum 6.5 inches for a robo. Also a few items like a bendy bridge or a cork log may help, alternatively look around your home and see what you can recycle from packaging . i.e. cardboard boxes or toilet rolls to make hidey holes or tunnels. I am sure once you get your hamster in an appropriate sized cages with a few things for enrichment your hamsters behaviour will change. Goodluck and any more questions, just ask and I am sure people on here will help.
