HELP! Think they’re fightingb
Hello,
Just need some advice on my two male robos, I bought them two months ago from my local pets at home and they were great, but now they seem to be fighting, they’re chasing each other and they’re tumbling about the cage and looks like they’re boxing kind of; I don’t know what to do I can’t tell if they’re just play fighting or not! They are still sleeping in the same house, letting each other play and eat! But every so often they’re tumblingbabout the cage! I just really have no idea what to do, do I separate them and if so I’m scared they might end up lonely cause I’ve I need to separate them I have no space and the other hamster will be going to a family member, but im just worrying that maybe they’re just playing fighting and then I separate and they become lonely
Can someone please give me advice on what to do
Thanks

I'm not an expert, but from what I have read on here, Ham's don't really get lonely because they are solitary creatures. I've also read that many kept in pairs eventually have a falling out.

That’s just my main worry , if I need to separate them will they be okay, so that’s made me feel a lil bit better, I have been on some of the forums and seen a lot are falling out just because I’ve seen no blood and then squeaking so I just can’t tell the difference between playing and it being a serious fight , just don’t want to take the chance incase of my them get hurt

Re: HELP! Think they’re fightingb
Dwarf hamsters can playfight and show dominance behaviours but itks difficult to tell the difference between that and actual fighting unless you’re very experienced with hamsters so I recommend seperating them immediately to be safe. They won’t get lonely, they might look for eachother and be a bit confused for a week but they’ll soon settle and they’ll actually be much happier living apart!
Do you have a spare cage or storage bin you can use? Size isn’t important for now so don’t worry if it’s less than the recommended minimum, its more important that they’re seperated and safe before their fighting results in serious injury or worse.

Re: HELP! Think they’re fightingb
As alpacassei says it can be very hard to tell what is play fighting & what is really falling out, any kind of fighting can escalate quickly & result in injuries so it is best to separate them before it reaches that stage, most pairs do fall out as they mature, it just natural behaviour & needing their own territory.
It's not unusual for hams to be fighting then go back to sleeping together but that doesn't mean they won't fight to the extent of injury.
Hamsters definitely don't need the company of another ham & don't get lonely, being territorial they are generally happier on their own.

Re: HELP! Think they’re fightingb
They are at an age when they are becoming mature as well and living in a single sex pair is not natural for them. In the wild they would be in family groups or pairs and sometimes only pairs until the female is pregnant. It's not nice to come down to a serious fight one morning. Even if they are not injuring each other yet the stress of being bullied and chased away from food and areas of the cage can affect the health of a hamster. I wouldn't risk it. They usually 'sulk' a bit for up to 10 days then become much more human friendly and should settle down well.

Re: HELP! Think they’re fightingb
I’ve had a Very similar experience, I recently got 2 robos as well, there six months and when I got them they were in a very small CritterTrail and had no chews or anything so I set up a large bin cage and a few day later they started to get territorial and started fighting so it’s alwsys better to be safe them sorry so I separated them and put one in the older cage until I get another bin. I was worried about them being alone because they grew up together but there doing completely fine, I’d say Sererate them because you don’t want one getting hurt, better safe then sorry
