Default Best Wheel for Robos?

Hi!
So I recently got a baby robo hamster called Monty, and we are having problems with the wheel that came with his new cage. So we plan on replacing the wheel.

I was thinking of either a flying saucer or a silent spinner. But I'm not sure which would be better for Monty.

Any advice?

I use the wooden wheels from zooplus for my roborovskis. They do need painting with pet safe paint though as they love to pee in their wheels!

As far as I’m concerned flying saucers are an extra toy, not a replacement for an upright wheel. I think an upright wheel is a necessity.
The one flowerfairy mentioned is good, as are wodent wheels and silent runners. Silent spinners you might find too small and I’ve heard they don’t even spin properly anymore. 8-9 inches is a good diameter size.

FlowerFairy and mangoandmimi gave great advice. Here is a link for wheels: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels

Robos and Flying Saucers dont seem to mix well, they also seem to go flying off!

My robo has the 17cm p@h silent spinner

I'd get an 8" wheel. There isn't another 6" one apart from the 6.5" silent spinner (which as mentioned can be stiff and not spin properly - it's since a manufacturing change).

Main Options are:

8" wodent wheel - petplanet sometimes sells them
8" karlie wood wheel mentioned above.

There are others but the 8"wodent wheel has small holes so a robo can't fly out. They tend not to fly out of an open wheel either - I just always worry that the wheels with the bigger holes they might jump out and misjudge the size of the hole and get hit - but have never heard of that being an issue.

I have a 9" wood wheel for our robo with a cork surface - very similar to the 8" karlie (might be 9" actually) that Flower Fairy has. I paint the whole thing with plastikote - including the cork surface and it's been fine.

Wodent wheel easier maybe - the wood wheel a bit of a safer sturdier design possibly but both are fine. Our robo has a flying saucer as well and uses both. I think he prefers the flying saucer overall. They soon stop flying off when they get used to it.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. My mum bought a flying saucer wheel and when first introduced to it Thursday night, Monty constantly went flying. He ended up pushing it against the side of the cage, and as this slowed it down, he was great in it! It was taken out and put in on Saturday for a little, and this time he was used to the speed of it and didn't go flying at all. It was taken out after about 15 minutes of careful observation and now his usual upright wheel is back, and he seems to be stopping running and flying around and out of the wheel, debatably either or both on purpose or unintentionally. Now I'm unsure what to do as I don't want him hurt but I don't know what is the best option for him. I'm going to try the saucer again later and see how he is on his current wheel... It's a process.
I plan on looking at the suggested wheels soon so that I can have a quick backup plan if this plan falls through.

Thanks again for the many replies.

I think they do fly off at first. Our robo was doing that in his upright wheel but he soon got the hang of it and doesn't fly off any more. He also did that on the flying saucer at first but has got the hang of that too now! Main thing is to make sure there's lots of nice soft substrate nearby and nothing to sharp to land on! I would put the flying saucer back - they get quite upset when things are taken away - sometimes a tiny wheel can even be too small for a robo as well but if you think the current wheel is big enough then stick with that and the flying saucer maybe.

Any wheel for a robo should be no smaller than 6" diameter really. Some are 5" and it's too small.

Yeah I completely understand the leaving it in, but Monty has a habit of moving all of his substrate and making his cage patchy, including near his wheel. That's why I tried to introduce slowly, as I don't want him falling out onto a plastic patch he makes during the night. I'll take caution with how I deal with the wheel. Thank you for your help!

There shouldn’t be any areas where you can see the plastic cage base, how much bedding are you using? With a barred cage you ideally want to fill the base about 3/4 up as a minimum, which will give a good few inches of bedding.
