Exclamation ESCAPEE RON! New cage??

Help! My little robo has escaped his cage somehow overnight. I know where he is, in fact I’m lying on the floor watching him patiently waiting for my chance to grab him! Is it possible he could have gotten out through the bars on his cage? I’ve had him for 12 days and haven’t seen him even attempt to escape...
He has a rotastak cage with lots of different parts, but I’m currently at my boyfriends so he is just in the “super pod” part as that’s the easiest to transport. Could he have gotten out through the bars? I was advised that if I could put my thumb through the bars and twist it then they were too wide but I can’t do that so I thought he was fine!
Can anyone suggest a cage without bars that is reasonably priced as I don’t get paid until next week. And I don’t have the tools to make a bin cage so really need one I can just buy ready made.
Thanks! I’ll ksep you updated on his capture 🙄

It is possible for him to have squeezed through the bars; the general rule is that the bar spacing should be 1cm or less. Rotastak cages are unsuitable for hamsters anyway as they are too small and have poor ventilation.

For new cages, the Ikea Detolf is a great choice as it's very well priced considering the size of it:

You could also try the Kerry:

Finally, the Alaska cage is inexpensive and the bar spacing is 0.9cm making it perfectly suitable for even the smallest of Robos:

Best of luck

The bars bend further apart at the top where they bend into the triangle shape so he probably squeezed through there.

This is a mini duna style tank for £22, theres bars on the top but the spacing is too small for a robo to escape. http://www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pe...c-hamster-home

If you dont have a pets at home near by then most other pet shops should carry the standard mini duna which is a bit more expensive but a very good quality cage (avoid the p@h version of the mini duna fun tho, the lid half is really fragile).

The Kerry and Detolf are good choices, dont forget to make a lid though if you choose the Detolf!

The Alaska has wider bar spacing around the top, corners, and doors that a robo could possibly either escape from or get stuck 😞

My favourite cage for robos is the Duna Multy, inexpensive, lots of space for deep substrate, and narrow bar spacing.

Both of those cages are too small. The Mini Duna measures 55x39cm and the P@H version measures 55x38cm. The minimum cage size is 80x50cm.

Hi guys thanks for everyone’s help!
As I’ve said I don’t have money to spare right now so £50+ is just out of the question. The only pet shop I have near by is pets at home or the poundstretcher pet hut. Do Ikea have anything else I could use? There’s one not too far from here. 50x80 is the maximum amount of space I have to fit him in as he stays on top of my chest of drawers. I think for peace of mind I’d like something with basically no bars or only bars on the top so he can’t get to them. Is the savic spelos XL too small?

Personally I’d stick him in a cheap bin for a week (no proper lid for a robo is fine if it’s tall enough, and is only temporary) until you’re paid. There’s a lot of nice cages that size but a bit over your current budget. The spelos XL is not ideal unfortunately.
If you really do want a cage right now your best bet is the Duna multy but to be honest it isn’t the biggest especially with the sloping sides. Think it’s about £40 but it’s online. Apart from the samla bin there’s not anything from ikea ready to be used.

Yeah I think I will try and wait, I had a storage bin for handling him etc so I have him in it right now. I’ll keep looking for other cages and see what there is out there, I don’t mind ordering online etc, will have a look on amazon as I have prime so quick delivery! If you have any other suggestions please let me know!

Also if I see anything else I’ll post it here for opinions/advice

Poundstretcher, B&M Bargins all do large bins for less than £10 which would be ideal for your Robo, I had some bins approx. 80x45x50 for about £7 from poundstretcher they are semi clear plastic with clip on lids I use them for storage in my garage.

I was recommending them as cheap temporary cages since this seemed like a bit of an emergency haha

I’d never recommend keeping a hamster in one long term, dont worry!
