Default Keeping two robos together

Hi everyone
New to the forum so I'm very sorry if this is already a thread!
I am adopting two robo hamsters (male, about 7 months old) in about a weeks time and this will be my first time owning two hamsters! I have the cage I was using for my previous dwarf hamster but it is rather large - about 2200sq inches and I'm worried that this will be too big for a pair and may cause fighting.
I have read many opinions and some people say that the bigger the better for pairs whilst other say don't exceed 1000sq inches. I am a bit worried that the size of the cage will cause them to be territorial and start fighting - is this true?
( I do have two of everything in the cage - wheels, bowls, bottles, houses etc)
Thanks for any advice!!

I had two female roboorovskis who fell out a few weeks after i got them they were in the maxi duna multy so avout 100 x 50cm

I later got 3 roborovskis in a small perfecto tank. They eventually fell out too, having been in their previous home about a year.

Have a second cage ready just in case and be vigilant. Best of luck with your boys. Roborovskis are just soo utterly loveky. Really fun hamsters.

Erinsanimals has some lovely robo vids on youtube as does victoria rachael.

Hi & welcome to HC.

It does seem that pairs do better in a smaller cage, a larger cage can give them more space to become territorial over & that can cause them to fall out.
What cage size are they used to? If they've been in a smaller cage until now than the larger cage could be a bit stressful for them along with the move to a new home.
If you don't have any levels in the cage, no shelves or ledges, & have plenty of little hideout places (always with more than one exit) they may be ok. It's very hard to be sure with pairs though, many do fall out as they mature so be prepared just in case.

They've been in a much smaller cage (below the minimum I think) for, I'm assuming, they're whole life. I always do quite natural themes so there is always loads of hides and toys and never really many large open spaces for them to get freaked out in.
I'm very happy to separate them if I see any squabbling and I don't really mind if they stay as a pair or not. I will just have to wait and see!
Thanks for the advice, sounds like they'll probably be separated but you never know!

Which cage is it? From what I've read from a robo breeder a cage for pairs can be too small or too large and there is a kind of ideal medium - but - it depends on how it's set up partly. I can't imagine 2,200 square inches! What is the length and depth? You could section it off so they start off in a smaller area and gradually increase the size. Robos are very active and if you have two of everything it might be ok. The sectioned off bit could just be a deep substrate/digging area eg.

Do you have a photo of your cage?

I can't think in square inches either but I think 2200 is bigger than a 100x50cm cage which is pretty big for a pair.

(First photo so not sure if it has worked!)

I hope this gives you some idea of size- thought it would be better to post a photo of everything inside for some idea of scale!

The cage is actually two Ikea Detolfs and we found a way of joining them together so it's just over the space of two detolfs due to the join.
This is one of the setups my previous dwarf had but if course for the robos, there will be two wheels, two bowls etc!

Thank you everyone!

That looks great! I do think it would be too big for a pair though especially if they've been used to a small cage the space could be overwhelming for them & quite stressful, it would probably be better to either section part off if you can or just start them in a smaller cage & see how they get on.

Thank you! That's a good idea, i think I may section off a smaller part of the cage and gradually expand it, hopefully they'll get used to the spac. As you say, it may end up being too big but I'll see how they get along with it. Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it!

Other members gave you very helpful suggestions which I totally agree with. The cage looks amazing, but it might be better to section it off and gradually expand their living space if all goes well. Best of luck to you and your two new robos. I hope that they get along well and you all have tons of fun together. I look forward to getting to know them and seeing pics of them whenever you get them. See you around the forum.
