Default Our robos are here! We need names :)

My boyfriend and I have been moved in a few weeks and received a message from our local pet shop last that they’d have robos in at the start of July and yesterday we went to get our pair!

I’ve had the cage set up for a few days, I’m hoping they like it. My boyfriend and I separated on quarter of the detolf as a “digging pit” with mesh. They have both had a wee dig in there. We also have a section as a sand pit, which one of them absolutely loves (we think! We haven’t been able to tell them apart yet- ones a wee bit bigger and I think she likes the sand pit). They seem to be getting along well and are eating and grooming and bathrooming just fine, so I’m hoping that means they are settling well.

We don’t have names for them yet. It was jokingly suggested that we name them Sylvia and Shelagh after our mothers(!) but other than that we have no idea yet. I think we will need to get to know them better.

I managed to get a few wee pictures which I will link here. https://imgur.com/gallery/JloE264

I’m glad to be back and I hope I can give these sweethearts a good life <3

They are adorable and it's a lovely set up! You may find they just nest in the digging area - our robo just digs a hole and lives under the bedding The wheel is a good size for them both to run in together. I can't see if you have a second wheel (doesn't have to be another large wheel) but I would add one. For a pair you need two food bowls, two water bottles and two wheels so they don't get territorial over anything and can have one each if they want. They may still share things but there needs to be another one of everything available to avoid fights breaking out.

Same with houses - or have you got it more natural and no houses? If you do have a house then again I would add another one and make sure both houses have more than one entrance (a cardboard tissue box with holes cut in is fine). Also best not to have any shelves or levels (which can also be claimed as territory). It looks like a great set up to me though.

Sorry if you know all this and I just can't see. Keep an eye on them for any squabbles. What can often happen is a pair will get on fine for a few months and then when they are older and hormones kick in, they can start fighting, and severe injuries can occur. If they start squabbling or fighting they need to be separated quickly and in different cages. There are people who have managed to keep pairs successfully for life, but just keep an eye on things.

One tip I read was - if taking them out of the cage, to always take them both out, rather than one at a time as in that short time, the one left behind can become territorial.

Two wheels, same large size we have a water bowl and a water bottle, but might put another bowl or bottle in if it would be better?
We just scatter fed them last night as I had heard that can be better to stop arguements over food bowls.
The set up is a bit hard to see as a lot of it’s buried. We have a long tunnel under the substrate as well as two houses both with multiple exits. I tried to bury th toys down a bit to prevent “shelves” one of the tunnels is a bit raised above the substrate? I’m not sure if that would be an issue.

Sounds perfect I would put two water bowls and two bottles in to be on the safe side! Scatter feeding is a good idea - better than food bowls.

Hi I am back with another update- our internet atill isn’t installed here so I’m conserving data.
We liked Crumble and Biscuit, but sitting with it for a while we’ve now gone with Rhubarb (Ruby for short) and Crumble. Rhubarb is the smaller, shy, darker coloured one and Crumble is the bigger, less shy, lighter coloured one.

We’ve had them for a week now and at first they were pretty frightened by us but now they seem totally fine to let us watch them. The last two days we’ve tried giving them a wee bit of food between our fingers. Crumble has taken a seed from my fingers yesterday morning before work. I tried with rhubarb after work and she sniffed it a few times but didn’t take it- maybe she doesn’t like sunflower seeds? but I’m glad we aren’t spooking them as much now a week has gone past.

They seem to be getting on well, both eating and both drinking. Still haven’t got round to getting another bottle but I got called in for temp work this week last minute. They love the wheel but seem to ignore one and both run together on the same one. It’s cute! But I wonder why they ignore the other one, it’s working fine.

My internet gets put in this week and I’ll make a new thread with their names? I guess? And I’ll fill it with pictures

Lovely names - Rhubarb and Crumble - and Ruby Great to hear they are friendly with you and doing so well I think they often prefer running on a wheel together but it's still important to have a second wheel so they have the option to run separately and don't start fighting for dominance over the wheel. Sometimes a syrian sized wheel is good for them to run in together as it's deeper with a smaller wheel for the second wheel. You could even have 3 wheels or 2 and a flying saucer Then they have lots of options!

They have two 21cm wheels and I’m thinking a flying saucer would be cute when I get paid. They are so cute when they run together!
Tonight Crumble sat on my hand to eat some seeds and now Rhubarb is more confident eating seeds from between my fingers. Both are much more hesitant with my boyfriend, though not scared. I guess I am around the most often when they are awake.

I wish our Robo would do that! He will sit and look at me if I open the cage but as soon as he even sees a hand he runs and hides.

Flower and Fairy both used to run and hide from my hands but Seren (rip), Daffodil (rip) and teeny little Maple all took/take food from my hands no problems.
