Default About Rainbow!

hello fellow hamster parents,

as i am new to the hamster central community and hamster parenting, i thought i would make a post about my first hamster, a robo called Rainbow. I have only had her for a week however i adopted her after my daughter (username CookieBlossomBella) had a friend who had a hamster (Rainbow) and she got bored of her and wanted to get rid of her but with my daughter currently studying A-levels and already having the commitment of 3 hamsters, i though i would look after rainbow as my own ham!
She has a beautiful personality, very playful and excitable!
I am currently trying to play-pen and bathtub bond her but if any of you have a better method for taming robos then please leave it down below as I am familar with the struggles that can come with taming them. I also have a few questions which i would appreciate you taking the time to answer:

1) An 8" wheel is alright for a robo isnt it?
2) What food do you recommend. She currently has the harry hamster mix- around 1 to 2 tablespoons a day
3) Obviously, i know i could not introduce her to another ham now but she wont get lonely will she?

Despite all of you giving me wonderful tutorials on how to upload images, myself and my daughter are still clueless! In a minute, I am going to see if my daughter can make my profile picture a picture of Rainbow so then you can all see a photo of her that way

Kind Regards
Sally75 and Rainbow the robo

Rainbow looks & sounds like a really lovely girl

Some people use a large plastic bin with toys etc for taming rather than the bath or playpen with robos, some may find the larger area a little overwhelming, they're all different though so you may just have to experiment a bit to see what works best for her.
An 8" wheel is fine.
A dwarf specific mix would be better for her, either Burgess dwarf hamster harvest (available from P@H or other pet shops) which is a good mix but doesn't have too much variety & can get a bit boring for them, a better mix is the Bunny Dwarf HamsterDream Expert from Zooplus.
Don't worry, she certainly won't get lonely, although some hams can live in pairs & groups the majority do far better on their own, they don't need the company of another hamster.

I'm not sure if you're confusing profile pics with avatars, avatars appear by your posts & need to be smaller (80x80pix) than profile pics so the one you posted here would be too big for that.

Hi, Sally and Rainbow!!! I am glad to see that Rainbow has her very own special thread. She is SO adorable and sounds extremely sweet. I am sorry that her previous owner lost interest in this little darling. I can never understand that. Thankfully, you came to the rescue and are giving her the greatest home filled with so much love and care. I do hope that the two of you will have many splendid years together and create many cherished memories.

1. Most research states that the minimum wheel size for robos would be around 8". Many HC members state that this should be fine. However, they don't really need one quite that big but robos shouldn't have any trouble running in a wheel that size. One of the moderators uses a 6.5” wheel for her robo, but he seems to prefer his flying saucer to an upright wheel. If you have the space in her cage, I would suggest having both an upright and a flying saucer as it seems that most robo parents tend to do this in order to give their robo options.

2. I am not as knowledgeable about a robo's diet so I will let other members who are give their suggestions on this topic. I have a Syrian.

3. Rainbow will be quite happy living alone so I would not worry about her needing company of her own kind. Since there is a high chance that any future robo that you may plan to introduce in the future will fight with Rainbow especially since they have been apart since then, I would highly not suggest putting them together. I just personally don't think it is worth the risk of them fighting or possibly killing one another. Robos have a tendency to fall out, fight, and need separtating even if they are from the same litter, have never been separated for any length of time, and are kept with others with the same gender. Those fights tend to be extremely sudden and very intense, possibly leading to serious injuries or even death. If you do decide to have another robo while you still have Rainbow, I would suggest that you consider having them live completely separate. That will mean that they can not be introduced even for a short period of time with supervision and in a hamster-safe playpen setting.

In the future, if you are still planning on housing robo pairs together, please keep in mind that although robos are social animals and are able be housed in single-sex pairs (preferably coming from the same litter), there is always a chance that they may have a falling out with one another. In order to minimize any potential fighting, they should not be separated for any length of time and there should never be anything in the cage that they can become extra territorial over. Also, all houses, etc. should have two entrances/exits just in case one needs to make a quick escape from the hiding place. There should be two of everything - wheels, water bottles, food bowls (although scatter feeding is another great option), houses, and sand baths, etc. You should keep a watchful eye that one isn't bullying the other and one doesn't gain weight while the other remains smaller (which can be a subtle sign that one is preventing the other from getting proper nutrients to grow). I would still be sure to have a second cage on hand at all times just in case it suddenly becomes apparent that separation needs to occur immediately. Once separated this pair can not be reintroduced to one another under any circumstances.

I am sorry that you and your daughter both had difficulties with the instructions that we posted on your previous thread. It looks like you both managed to post some lovely pics here though, so hopefully you will not have any other issues with posting pics in the future. Another option that I use to post pics is by doing it through my Pinterest account. I'm not sure if you have one, but if you do that is a very simple way to go about image posting here. After you upload your pics onto your Pinterest account as you typically do, right click onto the image and copy the image address. Then, go to the HC thread that you are trying to post your image to, type . Note that the bold lettering is just so you know what to type or click on; do not bold your items. I hope that this helps. This is actually the way I post all of my pics on HC, and it has been very successful for me.

Wow, this is a long post!!! SORRY!!! I do hope that it is helpful to you though.

Sally, I look forward to seeing you around on the forum, getting to know Rainbow, and of course seeing pics of your gorgeous fur baby. I will be wishing you and your little robo all the best with taming. Btw, Eros sends her high-four (since hams only have four digits on their front paw) to her new friend Rainbow, lol.
