Default Should I get robos?

Hello everybody,
So I am currently on my 3rd syrian hamster but i have never had dwarf hamsters before and well, I REALLY WANT ONE! Now, i have heard that robos can be hard to handle and tame etc so i was just wondering if you recommend getting one or maybe staying away from them and going for a campbells or winter white as i have heard they are slighly easily to handle and tame?

It depends I also wanted a robo - we have a Syrian as well. They are adorable but it's a completely different thing to having a Syrian. Easier in some ways, more difficult in others. I think if you want one then get one, but be prepared for the fact it may never be fully hand tame or be easy to hold. I talk to ours and he sits and listens and then spins on his saucer for a bit - he's lovely to watch. I have yet to tame him (although had a ridiculously busy few months so haven't tried that hard) and the hardest part about taming him is actually being able to get him out of the cage without feeling I'm stressing him out. The last twice I had to remove everything from the cage just to find him, scoop him up in a mug and put him in a taming bin.

So it really depends what you want. You're more likely to be able to tame a Russian dwarf if you want a dwarf hamster to hold and handle (although I believe they can also be harder than Syrians to tame).

I love having a robo - but I do like having a Syrian as well for handling and cuddles etc. It's just a different kind of interaction with a Robo. But they are fun and very cute and funny sometimes.

When you say Campbells or Winter White - they will all be hybrids of the two, unless you get a pedigree one from a breeder. So they may look like a Campbells or a Winter White but they will be hybrids. They're just as lovely but can have a predisposition to diabetes so that's something you need to be aware of when thinking about diet/hamster mixes.

It does depend on what you want, I've never had a robo (yet!) they are lovely but taming & handling can be harder than with the other dwarf species so if you want a ham that is going to be easy to tame & handle then I would go for a Russian (as Serendipity said unless you go to a breeder it will be a hybrid) if you're happy to accept that you may not be able to tame or handle a robo easily then go for that, some robos do tame fairly easily but mostly those that come from breeders & have been handled from a very young age.

I have a Robo who I'd consider to be tame but even a tame Robo will not want to sit on your hand for cuddles and generally they prefer to be on the go than sat still. My Robo was from a club breeder so yes, I did have a head start with him but a flexible approach may be needed in taming a pet shop Robo. I tend to find that it's easier to handle Josh when he's in a more confined space but if you want an entertaining pet to watch in their own environment then a Robo can make a very good pet.

Winter Whites and Campbells tend to be a little bit easier to handle on a whole but they can still be faster than a Syrian when they want to be. Oddly enough when I judged a show last year, it was the Winter Whites that were harder to judge rather than the Robos. A pet shop Russian or Winter White will be a Hybrid to some degree regardless of what pet shops label them as but some may have a closer resemblance to one species more than the other. They can make nice pets but are more prone to certain health problems. If you wanted to be sure of a purebred Campbell or Winter White then you would need to go to a club breeder who will be able to give you a pedigree that outlines your hamster's ancestors.

It's much better to start handling the Campbells and Winter Whites before moving on to Roborovskis as they seem to want less handling and more running.

I linked this on another thread about robos but it's written by a breeder on how they tame robos. I haven't tried it myself and actually haven't tried hard to tame our robo (yet!) due to a difficult and busy few months, but it will give an idea of what to expect and what can be achieved with time and effort. Our robo is already tame to my voice and me in that he knows me and will sit and listen to me and interact on that kind of level, which is nice. I haven't had a Russian dwarf hamster so can't compare, but even some Syrians can take some taming!
