Question Is my Dwarf Hamster safe from falling from tubes?

Hello Everyone! This is my first time acquiring a hamster (winter white) to be exact. This is the cage these two are living in temporarily until we can find a more suitable home, Kaylee CritterTrail Set, will the tube that is just straight attached to the dome (not the spinning wheel), cause any harm to my hamsters? They seem to fall frequently and they seem just fine however, I am scared in the long run they will get injured. Will they be ok in terms of falling from this tube? For reference, the tube is roughly one foot and my dwarf hamsters are relatively small less than 2 inches.

Hello and welcome to hc!

You are correct, those cages are designed (though still highly unsuitable) more for syrians.

It is good you plan to get a new cage but I would remove the tubes and wheel part asap as it does look quite a height and if they get stuck in either they could be at risk not being able to access water.

Also, I have no experience with WW but to successfully keep a pair they need space so they don't fight. Your WW are young but kept in that cage as they mature is increasing the risk of fighting.

Do you have access to a storage tub you could make into a bin cage? There are plenty of examples in our housing section.

Look forward to seeing your newbies

Hi & welcome to HC
The cage really isn't suitable but if it's only temporary then you could probably make it safer, it looks as though there wouldn't be far to fall if the base was full of substrate as it should be but if you can remove the tubes & block off the holes that would be better.
Pairs don't need too much space as that can encourage them to become territorial & fall out but it is important not to have any shelves or houses with less than one exit or anywhere one could trap the other or areas they might get territorial over, ideally you need two wheels & scatter feeding is preferable to using a bowl.
Do be prepared with a second cage ready at all times as most pairs do tend to fight & need separating once they mature & want their own space.

I think you could take out the tube going up to the lookout, cap that hole off and fit the tube with the lookout horizontally to the side of the cage on one of the other attachment holes - is that possible? My main concern would be stress and frustration at trying to get up there and not being able to get up there and falling back again. Do they actually use the ball on top and get up those tubes?

You need to upgrade them asap to be honest. You could either make a bin cage or this Fop Tamburino cage would be good for a pair (not too big not too small). The house has a big enough entrance they can both get in and out but you'd need to remove the runged ladder. As Cypher says you'd always need to be ready to separate them at the drop of a hat so the Crittertrail might be useful as temporary housing again in that event, or as a playcage when you're doing clean outs.

Two wheels, and ideally another small house, two food bowls and two water bottles needed. So they can each have their own and don't have to fight over anything (although they may share sometimes but it gives them the option not to have to). It might even be better to take that nice long house out as it's also a bit of a platform - that would give more floorspace for two smaller houses and two wheels.

HAMSTER CAGES

Another good option is the Lixit Mickey 2XL but that's expensive. It's very slightly bigger and has good ventilation being a cage. More space to fit two of everything in. It comes with one wheel and some play tubes - the metal grid shelf needs taking out as it's bad for their feet (and it's a level). I wouldn't use the tubes either as they're quite narrow and one could block other in or out and get territorial over it. Bigger tunnels are better for a pair (eg pringles tube).

Or if you wanted to make a bin cage, look for something that measures about 80cm by 50cm internally. They tend to slope down at the bottom so measure the size about 6" up as that would be the floor area with 4 to 6" of substrate in

I agree with everything said above. Just make sure that you replace this cage as soon as possible as it is highly unsuitable if you want to give your hammy a wonderful life. Good luck!

I actually found a storage bin lying around the house and is twice the leNgth width size depth of the cage and WAY more spacious so I quickly moved them in

Actually I have another quick question, (sorry for the spam), will my robo hamsters be able to escape where theres a height difference of one foot and 7 inches from their bedding to the top, with it being made of sleek plastic no ridges? I believe its almost impossible but my parents think they can

I don't think it's ever worth taking the risk & not having a lid on a bin or cage, it may look impossible for them to escape but things do happen so better to be safe!
If you've got that much height then you could put loads of substrate in for them to burrow in, they need at least 15-20cm but would be happy with more.

Thank you so much for the info! <3 And sorry for all the questions, my parents refuse to help (im 17). Also, in terms of food bowls, should I get two of them so they don't get territorial? They seem to have an hierarchy system, they would occasionally squabble but they would than sleep together and play together. Should I be worried?

If you'd like a less expensive but large barred cage, you can try this newly popular product.
